Sometimes Urgency is Just What the Doctor Ordered

Usually when things are going "well" or even "not bad overall", we don't have the inherent desire or energy to change our situation. Paradigmatic shifts and transformational life-level reconstructions usually require some form of urgency, if not a frank emergency.
For me, this urgency has happened many times in my life as a physician and has typically been created by something present in my world at the time that was essentially intolerable or at least overwhelmingly uncomfortable.
I would then find myself actively seeking the next opportunity to rectify whatever discomfort I was experiencing that made staying at the job less desirable than leaving.
Sometimes the need for my position would lapse and I would naturally look for whatever was coming around the corner as my newest adventure. As a physician and then a locum tenans, these opportunities were numerous and I could almost pick and choose. Starting a new job was always exciting, like a honeymoon period with a new friend or partner, and after a while, the luster would fade, and then...well, the "need" to leave seemed inevitable.
Some of the readers of this blog (you!) are now without jobs in health care that they have grown accustomed to and are feeling an urgency. Maybe the impulse is to find the job that most closely resembles where you were before (that's your identity talking) but I am now suggesting to PAUSE, CONTEMPLATE, PIVOT, and then DECIDE.
Maybe this time now is simply the space where you can take advantage of the perceived urgency by creating a path that is more aligned with who you are, even if it barely resembles what you have done before now. Authenticity carries a much higher satisfaction rating than familiarity, and that pause may also prove to be what the doctor ordered to put your life on a track that leads to extraordinary satisfaction with your work that you have never experienced before.
What would you do if familiarity and money were not factors in choosing your next direction?
