Before people start with our program, I always ask what they are eating every day.
More often than not, I hear about people having “just coffee” for breakfast.
And… if they do eat breakfast, it’s usually a bagel or a couple of slices of toast with jelly.
I tend to see a LOT of caffeine and a LOT of carbs! Not everyone is sensitive to caffeine, but you can also be affected by it and not fully realize it.
As part of this week's challenge, let's try to limit caffeine to one cup in the morning. Decaf coffee or herbal tea would be a great alternative to avoid caffeine altogether.
When we eat too many carbohydrates in the morning, it can cause blood sugar spikes, which later leads to blood sugar drops. Additionally, we burn carbs faster and tend to run out of energy quicker when we load up on carbs in the morning.
And finally, gluten can be inflammatory and reactive for many people. Limiting gluten can help to calm inflammation.
This week, let’s focus on getting in the habit of making sure that every time you sit down to eat, you’ve got something green on your plate and something with protein in it.
This shouldn’t be that hard with a little planning and a good grocery shop!
Doing this challenge will create awareness of what you’re really eating throughout the day, and will set you up to have better-regulated blood sugar and more sustained energy throughout the day.
Here’s an example of one day that follows these rules:
Breakfast: Eggs with sautéed onions, spinach & peppers
Lunch: Turkey Lettuce Wrap with an apple
Snack: Handful of celery sticks with almond butter
Dinner: Salmon with Asparagus and a sweet potato
Who says it’s hard to eat protein and greens at every meal?! ;-)
Doing this will not only give you more energy throughout the day, but you’ll have better stamina in your workouts and wake up more refreshed and ready to go!
