Something Much More Than Huge Pay

Employees can survive on low pay for months. But no one can survive a day without hope. Without hope, people get into depression. You can’t get the best out of your people with huge pay, but you can when you give them hope. Hope is the oxygen of productivity, creativity, and innovation.
Most times employers think they know what people really need. Instead of unlocking the potential of people, they unlock their greed. You can’t dangle money as the carrot to bait people into taking a job and really expect them to bring their very best to the table. They might do that at the start but eventually will want their greed whetted with more dollars.
You can’t assume what employees want until you empathize with them. You have to put yourself in their shows, then you will know exactly how to always have your people motivated. When employers fail to see from the perspective of their employees, they fail in their relationship.
It is this failure in a relationship that creates all the challenges and conflicts experienced in the workplace. Employers who see from the perspective of their employees will have inspired employees. However, those who don’t will have to constantly look for ways to keep their people motivated every day. You know companies that spend lots of dollars looking for ways to keep their people motivated.
Trying to motivate employees regularly is a waste of valuable dollars which could have been used to make the culture stronger. Inspired employees are self-motivated. You don’t have to find a way to motivate them. They love what they are doing and are hopeful that the future with their employer will keep getting bigger and better.
When employees step out of your building at the end of the day, do they feel energized and fulfilled or tired and empty? That is how to know the culture of an organization. It is about how it makes them feel after they leave the building. Are they anxious to come to the office and not in a hurry to leave, or do they dread coming to the office and are in a hurry to exit the building? The way you design your culture will determine that to a great extent.
My dad put in 33 years for the nation’s power company. When he is home, is it more like the company sapped him of all the energy he had? He is tired and sleeps off while watching the news. I made the decision never to work for anyone if that is what it means to work. Companies should always remember that people have families at home and should not take much more from them that they don’t have the energy and positivity to give back to their family.
Organizational cultures that see people as humans, not functions or roles ensure that people leave the workplace happy and fulfilled, anxious to get back to the workplace. The energy an employee picks from the workplace gets transferred to the home. And if it's negative, an oppressive environment gets created at home. However, if it's positive, a loving and growth environment gets created.
One way or the other, the way people feel at work always gets carried back to their homes, families, and society. That is why in the Truly Human Company world we say that a company that makes money while destroying families is a very poor business. Companies should make money while building families. When people love their jobs, they will be fulfilled. They will go home and spread the joy they felt at work.
Joy and care are contagious. People spent at least eight hours of their day at work, and as a result, the way their colleagues feel gets transferred to them. It’s hard to shake away such feelings. If it’s a positive feeling, then it's positively energizing and uplifting, but if it's negative energy, it could bring about depression. People are afraid of going to work on Mondays because of how work makes them feel.
The best way to give back to society is to create a culture that transforms your people into leaders and sends them home each day joyful, fulfilled, and feeling cared for and safe. That way you unlock their human ingenuity to create and their human ability to care. They will get into the world and spread positive energy and care. That is what a human-centered culture does.
