Human Beings: not as powerful as we think we are (PLEASE READ)

"All natural disasters are comforting because they reaffirm our impotence, in which, otherwise, we might stop believing. At times it is strangely sedative to know the extent of your own powerlessness." - Erica Jong

We humans consider ourselves to be so much superior to other species. Armed with all of our technological advancements, we think of ourselves as the masters of this Earth, who can control it according to our will. We think of ourselves as gods, who can do anything by using technology.

But in times of crisis such as the ongoing Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) or the 2015 Nepal Earthquake, we are brought to our knees by the sheer power of nature. We have to be reminded by nature that Human Beings are not the masters but just a species which inhabit this Earth for a fixed period of time.

I always try to rationalise the various images of the Earth wearing masks or being affected by the disasters that keeps on circulating nowadays. The Earth, or nature to be specific, does not care about any single species, be it Human Beings or others. It is our ego that makes us think that our actions will have any lasting effect on the Earth, we are but momentary beings in the long life of Earth. There have been many dominant species before Humans, all have now gone extinct. We Humans will also one day go extinct, we have to accept that even if we like it or not, and the Earth will still be here.

We must keep in mind that our actions will have consequences, and we have to be responsible for them. If we don't become responsible, nature will keep reminding us who the boss is, and the consequences of that won't be good. It is in times of crisis and disasters like the current one that we are reminded of how small we are when compared to the awesome power of nature.

It is high time we think of ourselves as not different nationalities, religions, or colours, but as members of the same species fighting for our collective survival. In this time of need, we must set aside our personal, political, or business differences, and help our fellow Human Beings and the society in fighting the Covid-19 Pandemic, as well as other issues like Climate Change and Pollution. We all are in this together, and we will fight for our survival as one species.
