Someone, somewhere...
...Is not going to like the best thing about your spirit.
...Is going to be disgusted by the best thing in your life.
...Is going to be offended by your most deeply-held conviction.
You could show up at the Grammys, win for Best Album, Best Artist in your category, and Record of the Year, and perform live at the highest level. And someone somewhere will go online and mock your outfit. Or your voice. Or your guitar technique. Anything.
That person could be a complete stranger. An absolute disaster of a human. A truly evil soul.
They might be a jealous rival. Someone who is so consumed with envy and hate that they were going to say it might just write a 10 page screed about your shortcomings.
But...that person might be close to you, making it hurt all the worse.
They might be someone in a position to hurt your career. They might be a family member, scared that if you succeed, then you will leave them.
They might be...well...you.
This is where we have to know that our decisions are ours. Our accomplishments may involve a complex interweaving of talent, skill, hard work and fortunate circumstances. Our decisions, however, are ours.
They often will require us to look someone in the eyes while they spit at us.

They may result in people we love being disappointed.
We might lose out on opportunities.
We might be unpopular.
But we have to try. We have to do the right thing. Even if the right thing is as simple as being the one person who says, "No." Or the one person willing to risk everything to say, "Yes" to a difficult journey.
But we have to decide.
Even if we've done the wrong thing before. Because we all have.
Have faith. Be good. Do good.
