Someone said I was no good at my job, and I'm glad they did
Weird headline eh? But I mean it.
Let me set the scene for you - an annual survey of employees, completely anonymous (as they should be) looking for good and bad feedback and everything in between. Fairly stock standard, but a good idea nonetheless.
Results come in, having a brief skim through of the answers and seeing the usual things you would expect to see, some positives in there (nice), some fairly decent suggestions (great), my name.....................wait what?????
Yep, my name in the comments talking about something I did. No hiding from it, literally named and shamed if you will. We will agree to disagree about the facts of the matter (my version is very different to the one that had been entered), but what I am absolutely stoked about is I'm being noticed and that this person actually took the time to contribute how they felt and what they thought. Even if in this case it probably wasnt what I was hoping to read.

So, you may be asking - if it wasnt what I wanted to hear, why was I so glad to see it? The answer is simple - without feedback you are nothing, you are dead in the water. Good feedback encourages you and supports you, makes you think 'hey maybe I'm doing OK here' and that naturally drives you to want to keep going. Bad feedback hits you in the face, makes you stop and think and even if you do come to the honest outcome of 'that's not actually right', it still means you took the time to think about what you're doing and how other people might perceive it. And to be a successful people leader, you need to be doing that every single day.
I am never looking to be best mates with everybody I work with - Mission Impossible. I don't even need them to like me. All I need is to support people to do a job, do it well and contribute to the team, and feedback is one really big way of doing that, because it's voluntary. So if someone is taking the time to do it, that's a win.
Now if I can just convince them to change their mind................oh well.
