Someone Knew (a culture of listening... or lies?)

A tale for teams...

Someone knew. Long before the market upended, before the business fell apart, before the team took a hit, someone knew that things were going sideways. They had the spreadsheets, yes; but more so, they had the gut sense. They had the experience, insight, track record, nuanced discernment of micro-tells — the stuff most other people don’t notice, but they do notice.?

“The spreadsheets can be wrong,” they rationalized to themselves, “so why raise an alarm?” In a rare moment of willingness to face the music, they asked themselves, “Is there something I can do that won’t trigger everyone, possibly a whole marketplace? Someone who might be able to hear me and help me, even when I know we’re all deep in it? Someone who won’t get dramatic, shoot the messenger, shoot me? Someone sober-minded, who won’t shame me, blame me (even if it’s true that my ego got us into this mess)? Someone who can listen, and problem-solve with me… before things get even worse?” ?

“No,” they concluded. “Nobody I know has the ability to listen intently, not get triggered, not entitle themselves to reprimand me; no one who wouldn’t react in ways punishing, dramatic, distracting.” So they didn’t say anything. They didn’t raise any alarm. They went on as if everything were just fine… but everything wasn’t fine. They knew it. But they felt hapless, helpless to ask for help. They felt utterly alone in it. Stuck. They carried it like a secret, like the ticking bomb that it was...

Questions for Me & My Team: Available for the Bad News?

Before markets upend, before businesses fall apart, before teams fail, someone knows.?

  • How available — and able — am I (are we) to listen, even to news I (we) don’t want to hear (from my team, from my clients, from my boss, from myself)??
  • How willing — and able — am I (are we) to share my (our) impressions, data, insights, hunches… even the ones that may not be so welcome (with my team, with my clients, with my boss, with myself)?

Thank you for posting this Molly Sargent. Listening is like a muscle. We need to train ourselves to make it work well. Especially when we don't like the topic but still need to listen and have a conversation.
