Today I stopped in Dunkin Donuts for breakfast and to see my son - Michael - in action working at his second job. As I watched him behind the counter treating customers with respect, being patient and kind, the pride I felt was uncontainable. In that moment I had an idea for this article and I hope it inspires.? The pressures of daily life can often feel overwhelming and the ability to be a beacon of light and joy for others is a rare and invaluable gift. ?My son, Michael, serves as a powerful example of how one person’s natural charisma, genuine kindness and unwavering positivity can uplift those around them. Here’s how you can cultivate this same spirit and spread joy in the lives of others.
1. Embrace the Power of Positivity
Michael's innate charisma is one of his most remarkable traits. What truly sets him apart is how he uses it to make others feel good about themselves. Positivity is contagious, and when you choose to see the best in situations and people, you inspire others to do the same. Embrace a positive mindset, and actively seek out ways to brighten someone’s day. Whether it’s a simple compliment, a smile, or offering encouragement, small acts of kindness can have a profound impact.
2. Be Genuine in Your Interactions
People are drawn to authenticity. Michael’s ability to connect with others stems from his genuine care and interest in those around him. To be a light in someone else’s life, it’s essential to be sincere in your interactions. Listen actively, show empathy, and be present. When people feel heard and valued, they are more likely to open up and you create a space where joy and positivity can thrive.
3. Lead by Example
Michael’s work ethic, reliability, and dedication to excellence are qualities that naturally inspire those around him and his co-workers look forward to working with him. When you lead by example, you set a standard for others to follow. Strive to be the best version of yourself, not only for your own growth but to motivate and encourage those around you. Your actions can serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, guiding others toward positivity and success.

4. Foster an Environment of Inclusivity
One of Michael’s greatest strengths is his ability to make everyone around him feel good about themselves. This inclusivity is a key element in spreading joy. Create an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued, regardless of their background or circumstances. Inclusivity fosters a sense of belonging, and when people feel like they’re part of a supportive community, they’re more likely to spread that same kindness to others.
5. Celebrate the Success of Others
Michael’s charisma isn’t just about making himself the center of attention – although truth be told he doesn’t mind it; it’s about uplifting those around him. Celebrate the achievements of others and share in their successes. Acknowledging and supporting the accomplishments of others can create a positive ripple effect, encouraging more people to strive for their own goals while spreading joy in the process.
Of course, when I see my son I feel joy, pride and love. However, when I view him through the eyes of others it’s easy to see the impact that one person can have on the world around them. By embracing positivity, being genuine, leading by example, fostering inclusivity, and celebrating success, you too can become a beacon of light in the lives of others. The world needs more people who bring the SONshine like Michael—individuals who not only spread joy but also inspire others to be better human beings. Let’s all strive to be that source of light and joy in our communities, creating a ripple effect of positivity that reaches far and wide.
