Some Uncommon Interview Mistakes To Run Away From.

I've had people come to rant to me here on LinkedIn about job rejections they face in the labor market.

This week, a guy messaged me to vent his frustration regarding how he believed he performed exceptionally well in his interview, only to receive a rejection email.

I provided a list of common mistakes he might have made during the interview, but he insisted that he was aware of those mistakes and had taken great care to avoid them.

At some point, I was genuinely perplexed.

After a while, I realized some very uncommon interview mistakes he might have made, which likely contributed to his job rejection.

And, as usual, my suspicion was confirmed. ??

In this article, we'll explore some of these often-overlooked interview blunders that might be holding you back from landing that dream job:

1. Being Overly Confident:

Overconfidence can be detrimental to your interview!

Never approach an interview with excessive confidence, as it may inadvertently make you come across as prideful or arrogant.

This can negatively impact your chances of success.

There's a very subtle distinction between confidence and overconfidence.

It's essential to be confident, but never let it tip into overconfidence.

Striking the right balance is key. ??

In an interview, it's crucial to remember that humility is just as important as confidence.

While you want to showcase your skills and experience, it's equally important to acknowledge the expertise of your interviewers and show a willingness to learn.

Employers value candidates who can strike this balance, as they are more likely to be collaborative, open to feedback, and better team players.

So, focus on demonstrating your qualifications without overshadowing the conversation and diminishing your chances of success.

2. Being Overly Casual:

Projecting an excessively casual demeanor, dressing too informally, or using slang in your responses can make you appear unprofessional.

To leave a more polished impression, avoid unnecessary jokes, opt for professional attire, and demonstrate basic interview etiquette.

In terms of behavior, avoid using slang and making jokes that are unrelated to the job or the company culture.

While humor can be an asset, it should be used judiciously.

Unnecessary jokes can detract from the seriousness of the interview and undermine your professionalism, abi na unrelated jokes carry you go there, Peter?????♂?

Lastly, displaying basic interview etiquette is essential.

This includes punctuality, a firm handshake, and maintaining eye contact.

These small details can have a big impact on the interviewer's perception of you.

3. Over-explaining:

It's important not to divulge excessive information during an interview, as this can distract or confuse the interviewers.

Instead, focus on providing concise and relevant answers that revolve around the client's pain point.

That's one approach to demonstrate your commitment to their development while also using that approach to highlight your expertise.

Remember, the interviewers are interested in understanding how your qualifications align with the role and its requirements.

Focus on addressing their specific pain points, showcasing your problem-solving abilities, and demonstrating your accomplishments.

By providing clear, concise, and relevant responses, you not only avoid over-explaining but also make it easier for the interviewers to assess your suitability for the position.

4. Lack of Curiosity:

Before concluding any interview, always make an effort to ask at least one thoughtful question.

This signals your genuine interest in the position and the company.

Your question can revolve around their work culture, objectives, or the organization's history.

Never underestimate the impact of these uncommon mistakes.

Asking well-researched questions not only demonstrates your commitment to the opportunity but also allows you to evaluate whether the company aligns with your own career goals.

By asking questions, you engage the interviewers in a deeper conversation, showing that you're not just seeking any job but are genuinely interested in joining their organization.

This can leave a lasting positive impression and increase your chances of being remembered and considered for the position.

That's a wrap for today!

These four points sum up rare interview mistakes that, when addressed, can significantly improve your performance in job interviews and enhance your prospects of securing your desired position.

Remember that interviews are a two-way street, and your approach can make a lasting impact on the interviewers' perception of you.
