Some things remain the same

Some things remain the same

We’re coming to that time where many agencies are looking to write their predictions for 2025. No doubt AI will feature heavily as will the usual tropes about ‘data’. Indeed we are led to believe that change is the only constant.

The greek philosopher Herclitus said “something along the lines of “No man ever steps into the same river twice for it is not the same river and he is not the same man” which is true to a point but as we’re bombarded with predictions, many of them at the moment quite fearful, it’s important to remember that there are certain positive aspects in our lives that remain stable. Here are 5 things that won’t change in 2025.

1. Human Nature

Despite the rapid advancements in technology and the more recent diverse shifts in societal norms, human nature remains a constant. Our fundamental needs for safety, connection, love, and meaning are timeless. People will continue to seek meaningful relationships, pursue their passions, and strive for personal growth. Marketers should always be aware of this intrinsic truth and that at the core of our profession is our role in solving a consumer problem.

2. Economic Fundamentals

While markets may fluctuate and new industries may emerge, the basic principles of economics will stay the same. Supply and demand, price sensitivity, the importance of innovation, and the need for financial stability will continue to drive economic decisions. Price and value for consumers will always be a priority whether we are in a low or high inflation economy.

3. The Importance of Health

Health is a top priority for everyone. When you don’t have your health it impacts all aspects of our lives. Increased HFSS regulations are coming down the line, but at the end of the day it is up to manufacturers to make healthier food de facto, and not just a ‘choice’.

4. Environmental Concerns

The need to address environmental issues will continue to remain a pressing concern. Climate change, pollution, and conservation efforts will continue to be at the forefront of global discussions. Consumers will continue to demand that businesses follow sustainable practices that remain critical for the health of the environment.

5. Technological Reliance

Our reliance on technology is unlikely to diminish and is an integral part of daily life. While new innovations will emerge, the fundamental role of technology in communication, work, and entertainment will remain constant.

So, whilst change is inevitable, it is important to note that humans haven’t really changed their needs and behaviours in the last 10,000 yrs or so, they just manifest themselves differently. So as we look to 2025 and beyond it is important not to get carried away with change as so many marketers do. And remember that the consumer, the building blocks of our lives, and the levers that shift behaviour,? remain pretty much the same.?
