Some space
Are there times when you feel the need for some space? We all need to have some “space” of our own. This could translate as time to ourselves and/or or a physical location where we can recharge our batteries and renew our spirit. In ancient times, such places were considered sacred and were often located in natural settings, such as a grove, a hill, valley or mountain. But you don’t have to go outdoors to find a sacred space. If you like, you can create one right in your own home.
It doesn’t matter how small your living quarters may be, a corner of a room is sufficient. A sacred space is an area where you can sit, meditate, contemplate, or let your mind wander, relax, ponder and dream! Begin by placing a small table or a shelf in a corner on which you can arrange images, photos or pieces of artwork that hold meaning for you. Honour nature’s presence with fresh flowers, a small plant, seashells or even a crystal. Natural light is also an asset. A candle, incense or essential oil diffuser can add to the atmosphere. Likewise, wind chimes, bells or just soothing music can also help set the scene. Finally, you need a comfortable chair or cushion to sit on. And now you have a sacred space … a place where you can relax, get comfortable and experience peace of mind.
Joseph Campbell, the famous American author who wrote about myths and incorporating them into our lives, understood our need for sacred spaces. He says it best in his own words, “[Sacred space] is an absolute necessity for anybody today…. if you have a sacred place and use it, something eventually will happen…. Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again.” I want you to think about these words!
I hope you’ll take the time to create a sacred space in your home if you don’t already have one!
