Some Post-Election Thoughts

Here are some post-election thoughts I am sharing with friends….
Leading a unique and diverse town like Fairfield has been a joy and privilege. From my first day on the job in 2011, I embraced the work wholeheartedly and did my best for the town. I want to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as First Selectman for the past eight years.
As I reflect on my years in office, there are so many amazing memories.
I will always remember how we came together to overcome Storm Irene, Storm Sandy, Snowstorm Nemo, and the recent Rooster River flooding event.
I will remember how we came together in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook tragedy working to make our schools safer for students, teachers, and staff.
Memories of Memorial Day parades, 4th of July Fireworks, Blessing of the Fleet and Southport parades, our very special 375th Anniversary Celebration and Gala event will all always hold a special place in my heart.
I have been privileged to work with wonderful individuals generously volunteering their time and expertise to serve our community on a variety of town initiatives. I am so grateful to have supported and worked closely with the many essential non-profit organizations providing invaluable services to our residents. I have spent many hours and some very late nights working with those that serve on boards and commissions as well as that very special group known as town employees. Their dedication and hard work too often goes unnoticed – our Fire, our Police, our DPW and WPCA, our Library, our Parks and Rec, our Teachers, Administrators and Staff at the BOE, and all the other town offices and departments. They keep our town running smoothly and efficiently.
No one has had a better view than I have to see how much love , devotion, and care so many continually give to our town to make it so very special.
There is so much good that has been accomplished during these eight years. Of course it goes without saying I am very sorry for the impact the recent Julian pile and related issues have had on our residents and community. Nonetheless, I am very proud of my record and our achievements.
I couldn’t begin to list all the recognitions and awards our town has received for the efforts of residents, volunteers, employees, departments, committees, schools, teachers. It is vital that we never take this excellence for granted.
We all need to be grateful and cherish this special place we call home.
What’s next?
My first priority was to make sure there was a smooth transition to the new administration. Giulia and I spent Thanksgiving in Vermont with her family and a few days after to relax. I plan on taking a few weeks off during the holidays. My next priority will be to look for a new opportunity – something where I can continue to make a significant contribution and real difference.
Thank you again for your friendship and support, Mike
