1 in 10 people in the U.S. have a rare disease. It just might not be obvious when you look at them. This is why Remedy Group joined together this week to ‘show our stripes’, as a reminder that some people might be zebras the zebra being the official mascot of people living with rare disease. Every zebra’s stripes are unique, mirroring the uniqueness and complexity of the more than 10,000 individual rare diseases, each of which impacts people in distinct ways. Dressing in zebra stripes this week was a way for Remedy Group to stand in support of the 30 million Americans living with a rare disease.?

From the thousands of rare diseases fragmented into small patient populations, it is practically impossible for a healthcare professional to know about them all, which is why misdiagnosis or a difficult path to accurate diagnosis is the reality for most patients — an experience often referred to as the diagnostic odyssey. In fact, a journey to diagnosis can take on average 4.8 years in the United States.??

The rarity of a person’s condition can mean that little is known about it, which can lead to a lack of understanding and support. In addition, rare conditions are often complex, affecting multiple body systems, and require specialised and well-coordinated care. This can all have a profound impact on the lives of rare disease patients, affecting factors such as access to education, financial stability and mental health. Additionally, rare patients find themselves having to become the expert in their own disease and their own biggest advocate. Every healthcare professional can help to reduce the time and mental load it takes for patients to get an accurate diagnosis by simply considering that a patient may be a zebra, in the first instance.?
