Some notes on visual literacy and learning
Visual skills and education
Visual data surrounds our modern lives (Palmer & Matthews, 2015). Visual literacy is a critical twenty-first century skill and integrating learning activities that support visual literacy skills can significantly improve student learning (Palmer & Matthews, 2015). The integration of visual learning methodologies into education can significantly improve the current educational system (Cuadrado-Gallego, Herrera, Pastor & Marín, 2011).
Visual literacy defined
Visual literacy is an elusive concept to define and involves multiple and complex dimensions and skills; its essence is the ability to interpret and make meaning from information presented in visual form (Palmer & Matthews, 2015). Visual literacy is the skill of communicating knowledge through images and the digital age affords the opportunity for easily presenting information in visual format (Bell, 2014).
Visual literacy and learning
The exponential growth of information and communications technologies (ICT) has facilitated the integration of multimedia into the classrooms and the creation of visually rich learning experiences (Cuadrado-Gallego, Herrera, Pastor & Marín, 2011). Visual and video educational resources are appealing to students in the online or offline mode because they can independently control the pace of learning in the comfort of their their learning environment (?zdemir & Yildiz, 2015). Particularly for e-learning, visual presentation of content alongside of text may be a beneficial and effective strategy for achieving more student learning (Sung-Hee & Boling, 2010).
