Some Notes and Quotes on Bill Gates' Book on Climate Disaster
Indeed I have managed to finish Bill Gates' book on Climate Disaster and the Breakthroughs we need. This book is good enough for me as an engineer to understand the magnitude and consequences of the problem. Bill is not only a very bright mind, but also a great teacher. I also have realised that this book is really being read. When I spoke to friends and colleagues about the book, almost everybody pulled this very same book and showed it to the camera while having a video conversation. Happy to know that so many have at least this fundamental information that Bill has put together. Now two quotes:
1) "I agree with the 2030 advocates on one thing: This is urgent work. We are at the same point today with climate change as we were several years ago with pandemics. Health experts were telling us that a massive outbreak was virtually inevitable. Despite their warnings, the world didn't do enough to prepare -and then suddenly had to scramble to make up for the lost time. We should not make the same mistake with climate change. Given that we'll need these breakthroughs before 2050, and given what we know about how long it takes to develop and roll out new energy sources, we need to start now. If we do start now, tapping into the power of science and innovation and ensuring that solutions work for the poorest, we can avoid repeating the mistakes of pandemic preparation with climate change."
2) "It is easy to feel powerless in the face of a problem as big as climate change. But you're not powerless. And you don't have to be a politician or a philanthropist to make a difference. You have influence as a citizen, as a consumer, as an employee or employer".
The climate urgency and the need for a sustainable approach in business and society is not something that can be put in question. Industrialisation and Globalisation are definitely warming up the Earth, there is nothing to be doubted there. Sir David Attenborough has sent a compelling message for the COP26 meeting in Glasgow. Let's scream it out!
