Some Lessons on the Crafts of Writing
I had an inspiring and insightful conversation with Karen Benke, author of five books, free-write facilitator, and poet-teacher from California, USA.
Karen gave me a lesson in how to bring a book to life. She shared how overcoming fear and dedication helped her find a fabulous agent, an a-ma-zing editor, and get a book deal with Shambhala Publications that's owned by Penguin Random House. Karen believes in doing instead of talking, in pens and paper, and that everyone is creative.
All this gives me hope that I can use some of Karen's tools and tactics in my future creative projects.
In this conversation, the takeaways will get you to think about your own creative process and help everyone write better - no matter what your age is.
On Fear:
I think it’s crucial to do one thing every day that scares us. It helps us to move out of the little bubbles of comfort that we live in and can too easily get trapped by.
On Staying Dedicated to our Project:
We stay inside, we don’t go out, we stick it out, we get uncomfortable, but we make sure to put in the hard work until it’s done.
On Being Successful in Writing:
Don’t undermine yourself…if you say you’re going to do something, do it. Build that muscle of trust in yourself.
