12 Things About Life I Discovered This Summer
- When you focus on manifesting what you want, it will happen. This applies to business and personal life. I will never forget saying to myself that I felt I was ready to have a new relationship that would be perfect and a month later I met my husband (now belated). Now, I might say I'm going to have a perfect day and I find that I do indeed have that perfect day that I've been thinking of. You just have to put self belief into everything you do. This year I was determined to have a birthday that was with new and old friends. Coincidentally, on my birthday weekend I ended up meeting up with a large group of my Kellogg MBA alumni in Greece and I had also brought some new friends. It was just as I had expected.
- Be friendly to the staff at Starbucks that make ice coffee next to your office. I needed them more then I thought. In general, this applies to everything. It doesn't matter who it is, a certain level of respect is always necessary and can just make your day flow better. When you project impatience, anger etc. it just causes you to attract more. It is the law of attraction.
- Please keep both summer and winter wardrobes accessible during British summer.
- Never buy a squeaky toy for your neighbour's dog. It gets very loud. I like our new neighbour's dog, but the squeak was a distraction all summer long.
- Do take a break. This does not mean going away and still raising money, doing deals or checking your phone for messages on WhatsApp every minute and working on the laptop. I can't say I took my own advice but I am told it is a worthwhile exercise.
- Appreciate the sunset. I saw the most amazing sunsets in Mykonos. It puts things into perspective. Are the little things really that important?
- Make sure you get to the gym. I hired a trainer after severe back pain from flying and sitting at a deck so often. Posture makes all the difference and not only does it make you appear slimmer it also makes you feel taller. Very worth it.
- Always negotiate. Even with your trainer and when you don't think you can - just do it. There is always a deal to be done and a win win for both parties. We were recently quoted a 7 figure sum for our new website design. It is now 5 figures. Substantial difference. It was worth getting into the detail.
- What comes around, goes around. If you attract negative energy or other people's emotions, then you tend to carry it with you. Put a white bubble around your body every morning. Just envisage it. I learned about being an empath many years ago and you will instantly recognise if you are one. More here: https://themindunleashed.com/2013/10/30-traits-of-empath.html.
- It doesn't matter if you sit on an plane or on a bus, there is always someone who has something to say. You can learn anything, anywhere, anytime. Keep an open mind to what might come your way. I met someone on an EasyJet flight who happened to email me two years later forwarding me some really useful information on a competitor. Sometimes messages get delivered when you least expect it.
- Speaking of competition, don't worry about it, in the end there is enough to win just focus on what your goal is and don't lose track. Don't sell-out and copy. I think the key for my business has always been to stay original and lead even if you aren't the fastest you just have to be the smartest.
- When it starts to get darker and summer ends, do invest in good lighting. I am not just saying that as the owner of The Longest Stay, but it is well worth brightening up your home and making sure that you have fantastic light.
