Some fun memories

'Coffee for real men'

It was around the time of Pokémon GO, that I started to get creative. We had just started a little marketing firm and were looking for our first clients.

But... who wants to hire two young students with big mouths and ambitions larger than life? Right.

'Real men bring home dinner. Not Pokemon'.

(one of the viral FB post we made)

So after an alcohol-infused brainstorm, we came up with the crazy idea of starting a local coffee brand. Not that we knew anything about coffee...

We had the assumption that local entrepreneurs and businesses would favour a local coffee brand, buy our coffee, and allow us to do their marketing.

Yes. You read that right. 'Assumption'

Anyway, to start off strong, we devised a content calendar that was 'remarkable', to say the least. Did mainstream go left? Then we went right -and vice versa.

It worked. Soon, the coffee brand started to get much traction.

So do you scale your first successful business?

Right. We bought a big-ass army truck that used 3 litres of petrol for every 1 km we drove.

Fun fact: Each delivery cost us ±€5.

But seeing the 'W*F?!' in people's eyes when you rang their bell around 22:00h at night, just 20 minutes after their order, with a large army tank on their doorstep,

AMAZING.

People talked about the brand. People were ordering just to see if the tank would pop up too. It worked.

I learnt that the best marketing is to be radically different and over the top.

'Joost, the neighbours just asked if you can please move your tank. It's blocking their view'

Another fun story

This week I went out for dinner with my good friend ★ Rob Schalker ?? ?? . He's has been -and still is- my mentor when it comes to entrepreneurship and creating opportunities. I wrote this article about him.

Anyway, we talked about the time that I finished my internship and got my first real marketing job at his company.

'Remember when we gave that Dolphin away?!

WUT?!

We laughed about the fact that we casually gave away a real dolphin via Facebook. The reactions on Facebook were off the charts. Animal right groups weren't reading our text but went mental instead.

Together with the only dolphinarium in the world that lets dolphins swim in open ocean (Curacao), we organised that the winner would swim with 'his/her' dolphin for an hour. Nothing too exiting or crazy... But with 2 million views, it was the best €300 I've ever spend -or Rob in this case :-D.

Have a nice weekend!
