Old School Finds A New Audience
That old digital camera you might have forgotten about in a box in your closet may now be in demand.?
Gen Z has been turning to older photography technology to capture different looks.
The two cameras featured here are proving popular, both released in 2009.?
On a recent trip back to Sydney, I visited my storage unit and happened upon a plastic storage tub that contained some of my old cameras - digital and film. I brought them back with me to Bangkok and am now planning some photography projects with them.
My haul included a Canon digital camera from 2012, a Sony digital camera from 2004, a Canon SLR film camera from the late 90s, and a Nikon point-and-shoot camera from the mid-90s, plus rolls of unused film.?
It’s easy to get caught up in wanting the latest and greatest tech, but there is something charming about going old school and seeing what you can do with it.
Check out an article about this new trend, or should I say old trend in the links at the end of the newsletter.?
Kill Your Darlings
If you haven’t yet seen the documentary film Kill Your Darlings, released about two years ago, make some time to watch it. It’s about the advertising industry and includes some great insights about the business.?
The film is told from the perspective of a female Creative Director, she meets with several creative leaders and founders, to get their take on where the industry is and where it is going.?
It’s well worth watching if you're new to the industry or even if you have been in it for decades.
Asian Mobile Photo Contest
Own a smartphone? Do you like taking photos? Live in the Asia region? Then this photography competition could be for you. Entries close in 5 days.
I'm a big fan of street photography and often I just use my phone as it is always with me - I don't always leave my apartment with one of my cameras in hand...but that may soon change.
This competition looks interesting - more details in the links below.
AI x Architecture & Design
AI can open up a lot of possibilities when it comes to flexing your imagination and trying out new directions, designs, and ideas.
Some Architectural Designers have been using it to think far outside the box and explore new possibilities.
Designs that may have previously been thought to be impossible can be explored and visualised. Being able to generate intricate geometric forms and create unique environmental and structural designs is now at everyone's fingertips.
In the links, you'll find a selection of people who are pushing their ideas and imaginations with AI tools.
AI x Spec Ads
Runway Gen-3 was released last week and a lot of people have jumped on it and are experimenting with it.

One of them is a creative from Hungary, Gaal Laszlo, who created a spec Volvo TV commercial in 24 hours.
It's far from perfect, and the creator of it admitted this in some comments on LinkedIn, he said he just wanted to see what was possible.
Flaws aside, it is a pretty good test demo of what could be possible, especially if you were to blend other, more traditional post-production tools into it. Take a look for yourself in the links below.
Where Do Ideas Come From?
Whenever I'm asked the above question I often say - "Everywhere."
They come from going for a walk, going to a movie, strolling through an art gallery, reading a book, listening to a song, daydreaming, talking to someone, scribbling in a cafe and people-watching, jumping in the ocean, and everywhere else in-between.
It's much easier to say where they don't come from and that's by doing the same things over and over again, staying in your comfort zone and sitting in front of a computer.
Ideas are everywhere, you just need to create an opportunity to bump into them.
The Business of Art
If, like me, you either love art or buy art or make art this book is a great read.
It's an insider's view of the art world economy and how the money machine that drives it operates.
One of my favourite quotes about the art world is - "Art is what you can get away with." Andy Warhol
Creative Coaching
I offer one-to-one coaching for creative people no matter what stage of their careers they're at, be it just starting out or in a creative leadership role. And it's not just for people in advertising, you could also be in design, photography, fashion, art, or any other industry where you need to call upon your creative skills and talents and navigate any obstacles you might encounter along the way.
I am also launching the second edition of NOTHING LIKE A CREATIVE ADVERTISING BOOT CAMP - it starts on July 25 - only 5 spots available.
Get in touch here on LinkedIn via private message or email [email protected] for more details on any of the above.
