Some exciting VR news

We did it! Phantom: Covert Ops has smashed $1m in gross revenue within the first few weeks from launch. I think it’s a sign of how far VR has come in the last few years, and shows that it is now a very viable, commercial and exciting space to be in. As Oculus has revealed, more and more VR games are hitting the $1m milestone, and the fact that we’ve done it so quickly is a great sign for our game. Phantom has received a number of 8/10s and 9/10s from critics, the user reviews are trending over 90% and the game reached #1 on both Quest and Rift, all of which bodes well for its long term success and starts to demonstrate what the nDreams team is truly capable of. Phantom has also been nominated for the VR Awards “Game of the Year, although going head-to-head with some superb games like Half Life: Alyx and Pistol Whip is going to be tough!

We’ve been particularly delighted with the Quest version of the game. The headset is phenomenal, but I’ve been blown away with how hard the team have pushed it technically and what we managed to achieve. Reports indicate that the Quest continues to sell out as fast as Oculus can make them, which gives a pretty clear idea of the strong appetite for VR when it’s delivered in the right form factor at the right quality with the right games. I’m yet to meet someone who has a Quest and doesn’t love it.

I wish I could share a little something on some of the exciting new VR projects that we’re currently working on, but for now all I can say is we’ll likely have a couple of big announcements between now and the end of the year. We also intend to continue to support Phantom which, as you can probably tell, is an IP that we’re really proud of, and as a company we’re hiring rapidly, whilst also continuing to look for new opportunities and partnerships. The team has grown to over 110 people, and we’re investing an increasing amount in R&D as we explore new mechanics and VR gameplay, and come up with new original VR concepts and prototypes.

It has been a long journey since we took the decision to focus completely on VR at the end of 2013, and set out to build a world-class VR team. We’re getting better every single day, and I hope Phantom: Covert Ops shows just how much progress we have made. But be assured… there is much more to come!
