Some Certifications Are Worth More Than A College Degree

Here are four certifications that are being favored over college degrees. These five certifications are:

  • Domestic violence intervention for perpetrators. In California, the state penal code requires 40 hours of training in domestic violence shelter training in order to provide services to victims of family violence. No degree is required nor favored. This training is only available from state approved Shelter for Family Violence or Certified Batterers’ Intervention Provider.California Penal Code 1203.091 lists what must be included in all approved training for Certified Batterer’s Intervention Providers.
  • Anger Management Facilitator Certification. The American Psychiatric Association has determined that anger is not an illness and therefore is not included in the Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Nervous & Mental Disorders. Persons who provide anger management in California are not required to have degrees in any discipline. Certified Anger Management Facilitators must complete a 40-hour program that includes Emotional Intelligence Assessments, Clients workbooks for young children, adolescents and adults. A list of approved providers is delivered to each criminal and family law court each year. L.A. County Government Vendor ID is 51963101.
  • Emotional Intelligence Assessments, classes and coaching. Emotional Intelligence assessments, coaching and training is trending in business, healthcare and governmental organizations worldwide. Most of the research and assessments are the results of work done by psychologists, psychiatrists and organizational developments professionals.
  • Leadership Coaching “No one has yet demonstrated conclusively what makes an executive coach qualified or what makes one approach to executive coaching better than another.”In spite of this dilemma, there are currently no requirements for executive coaches to have any particular degree. The International Coaching Federation provides some standards for coaching in the U .S. There are no legal requirements in any state.
  • Certified Substance Abuse Professionals California has four main levels of certification as well as two levels that are trainee level and not required for actual certification and/or licensure and will not be covered in this article. The four levels are known as: the Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor Associate (CADCA), Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor I (CADC-I), Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor II (CADC-II) and the Licensed Advanced Alcohol Drug Counselor (LAADC). The first three levels require the completion of education as well as a practicum and supervised experience. The LAADC level requires a Master’s degree in a Behavioral Science if from another state, or a combination of a degree as well as supervised experience.
