Some advice you can feel really good ignoring…

Some advice you can feel really good ignoring…

I was talking to a client the other day and she had been applying for roles and not getting any interviews yet…

?

(Well actually that’s a lie) She did have one likelihood of an interview from a strategic conversation that she totally discounted… But that’s another newsletter.

?

What she told me was that another coach had told her that she should lower her bar.

?

Because she hasn’t yet gotten an interview, for the role she wants AND CAN TOTALLY kick butt in.?

?

And that she should consider applying for something less, more in line with what her Inaccurate the title says.

?

Because officially on paper she didn’t have the “official title," but she had been doing the actual job for a couple of years, she had some successes and she had some failures (Because who doesn’t)…

?

Basically her actual title didn’t reflect her accurate skills.?

?

The easiest thing to say is that you “should” go for a lower role.

?

It’s easier to think from limitation, scarcity and “take less, be less” mentality.

?

And it’s easier to make excuses like the market is bad, rather than get more creative and double down on your belief.?

?

Relax, before you come at me.

?

If you need to do a “for now” thing and that feels aligned for you, you do you. I’ll never claim to know what’s right for you, more than you do.?

?

But In this particular case.?

?

My coach's spidey sense was going off.

?

She HAD Actually done the role, in the flesh, she had the ACTUAL Experience.?

?

I’m over here thinking Many of my clients get jobs WITHOUT what she has! Based on both miraculous and incremental mindset shifting that gets them to believe they can AND so they do!?

?

This lovely client even further proved it by taking a certification in the field and turns out she already knew most of what that certification was teaching BECAUSE she had already done the role.?

?

This was like saying.?

?

Ok you’ve been a Manager before, Let’s SAY you ran the marketing department while your boss was out on sabbatical for 3 months. And the department grew, things were accomplished and you DID The job of manager. But because you weren’t “labeled the manager” it didn’t count.?

?

You know that saying “actions speak louder than words.”?

?

I’d 100% take someone who has the action over someone who has the words. I don’t know about you.

?

Dating comes to mind.

?

When I met my partner, what I first noticed about him was that when he says he’s gonna do something, I could count on that being true.

?

He proved it over and over, so I came to learn who he is.

?

? He said he was gonna text me and he would.

?

? He said he was gonna drop off something I needed, that I had left at his house on his way to work and he would.

?

? He said he was gonna make tacos for dinner and he would.

?

And trust me I met lots of people who’s word didn’t count for much, before him.??

?

It’s WHO HE IS. He actually can’t change who he is without intentional work.?

?

That’s not something you can talk your way into because if you're lying about who you are, you won’t KEEP a relationship based on a bunch of talk and no action.?

?

This is who my client IS:

?

?? Someone who steps up and takes on more responsibility when she sees a need.??

?

?? Someone who steps up and does something beyond your job when you can see it’s required.

?

??Someone who takes on the challenge even when you may not be ready.

?

THAT is WHO she IS.

?

What the title says on paper is MUCH less significant than WHO YOU ACTUALLY ARE.

?

Ok, now imagine me getting up on a soap box and yelling the following sentence:

?

“We can’t let something as silly as a RESUME get in the way of people seeing the truth about who we are.”

Because if we do… Then what does our life look like?

?

And for what? To play a system that there is a way around. Lots of ways around it actually…!?

?

AAANNNDdd if you're thinking… That’s great Natalie for her, because she did have the experience, what about me. I don’t even HAVE any.

?

Then you’re not tapping into WHO You are just yet:

?

I have many many clients who don’t have the official experience on paper or in the “label” BUTTTT can find several ways they have it in other areas of their life that they can’t see. These things are always missed.

?

For example: I have a client who became a Data Scientist and he didn’t have ANY official experience as a Data Scientist, not even any “unofficial” Unless you count going door to door for census canada to ask people questions:? “Data science experience”.?

?

He had NO technical Official or unofficial experience in the field.?

?

But guess what he did have!?

?

A bunch of stories about WHO HE IS… AND THAT was enough!

?

How he thinks in a certain way, and that way is valuable for the job he wanted because his desire was there for a reason.

?

In my next newsletter I’ll share a story about him because this newsletter is getting a bit long!

There are really certain advice we should ignore and that one from the other coach is definitely one. However, because we have placed these people at a level where we believe and trust what they say about us, it may be hard to throw out the bad stuff. That is where self-realization and self-awareness come in. I enjoyed reading this, Natalie Fisher. Thank you for sharing.
