Some 33 Elements of The Old Fashioned Organisation. What Makes an Organisation Old-Fashioned is Not How Old It is Chronologically But Something Else

Now, many people talk about the organisation but few get deep into it to fully understand what an organisation really is. One of the major reason is that very few people in positions of leadership and management ever start any organisation. Those who start do so my copying existing generic models and they therefore create the same organisational species as those that exist. The sad thing is that over 90 percent of the organisation in the world are old-fashioned; so very old fashioned that almost everything about them is also old fashioned. You may ask why I am passionate about this issue.

I am passionate because old-fashioned organisations are underperformers and many are failing to do what organisations are meant to do and those that are doing it are not producing their best possible results.

I am passionate about this because I am concerned about you.

I am passionate about this because old-fashioned organisations waste human talent.

I am passionate about it because old-fashioned organisations undermine the world's ability to achieve the sustainable development goals.

I am passionate about this because people who work in old fashioned organisations do not enjoy their work.

I am saying this because old-fashioned organisations are responsible for causing and perpetuating many of the leadership, social and economic crisis the world is facing.

What Constitutes and Old Fashioned Organisation?

Being old-fashioned is not about how long your organisation has been in existence. An old-fashioned organisation is old fashioned because it belongs to a the species of old-fashioned organisation. An new organisation can still be an old-fashioned organisation if its DNA is old-fashionic. When DNA is oldfashionic, the organisation will have old-fashioned genes and it will express its old fashionedness through its structure, composition, methods and approaches, behaviour, performance and results. Did you know this;

  1. That the organisational theory on which an organisation is built, run and managed is its DNA.
  2. That theory is the genetic code for practice
  3. That the overwhelming majority of leaders and managers resist the fundamental truth that to change the performance and results of their organisations they must change their theory.
  4. That your brain is an operating system that also operates on theory.

I am saying;

Old-fashioned organisations are old-fashioned primarily because they are built on, led on and managed on old-fashioned theory.

The Elementary Hierarchy of Organisational Old Fashionedness

Organisational old-fashionedness has a hierarchical structure; a pyramid. The following are the major elements of an old-fashioned organisation, not arranged in their hierarchy.

I am not saying your organisation is old-fashioned. Yours might be one of the less than 10 percent of the modern organisations in the world and I am extremely happy for you. If you are, I would be excited to hear and learn from you.

We need modern organisations now! Our future depends on them!
