Again, India has come across one more national disaster in the form of Pulwama terrorist attack after Kerala floods, death of manual scavengers, other terrorist attacks etc. In all national disasters, it is ultimately National defense forces who come to our rescue. The extent of these disasters can be greatly reduced if defense forces can have access to advanced indigenously developed technologies and can be made more powerful. In 21st century, technology is power and it is the responsibility of engineering community of the nation to provide advanced indigenously developed technologies to its defense forces.
If engineering community of India can see all these as social problems, and can give advanced technological solutions, such incidents can be prevented in future. Even if they fail, they will get the sense of solving bigger societal issues through technologies.
Its good to contribute in national disasters with money, relief material, condemning terrorist attacks online but it will not stop these disasters to happen again. For engineering institutes, the main contribution should be towards providing advanced technical innovative solutions to such problems.
Indian army has already launched a unique and inclusive effort through Army Design Bureau to synergise the efforts of strong Academia, Industry and R&D establishments to nurture homegrown technologies. The efforts will only fructify if niche and disruptive innovations/ technologies will be developed indigenously. They have compiled the third volume of Problem Statement Compendium which will provide a clear understanding of challenges faced by soldiers in the field.
The challenges are from the areas of Fire Power, Surveillance System, Information and Communications, Testing Systems, Mobility, Medical Equipments and Logistics.
Some of the challenges in first and second volume have been received well by IISc, IITs, NITs. The complete list can be found at below link: https://www.sidm.in/sites/default/files/SIDM%20compilation%20of%20research%20projects.pdf
