Solving The Truck Technician Shortage...

Solving The Truck Technician Shortage...

One military veteran at a time! Today's commercial trucking market is busy and there is no shortage of maintenance work. Trucks, trailers, tires, and other equipment must be maintained for your dealership or fleet to be successful. The big shortage lies with the people who are performing that maintenance work. Not too many of our high school seniors are sitting in their desks dreaming of turning a wrench, repairing a truck tire, or replacing a trailer door.

Most commercial truck/tire dealers and fleets continue to use old antiquated methods of attracting new technician talent:

  • Stealing technicians from other dealers/fleets for $0.50 more an hour
  • Pulling recent diesel school grads who've been trained on old equipment
  • Rolling the dice on family friends, acquaintances, ect that "may work out"

The recruiting and retention mindset and strategy must change to ensure future success. Dealers and fleets must create a learning, training, and coaching environment where they are developing their own technicians organically. Retention will depend on creating a culture of community and belonging where new technicians feel valued and included.

These new learning development programs must be filled with quality candidates who are fired up, coachable, hardworking, and loyal. Enter the transitioning military veteran. These individuals possess these qualities and are excellent additions to your team. They have raised their hand, took an oath, and defended this great nation. They are wrapping up their service at installations across the globe and are looking for a great place to start their civilian career. Will that place be your dealership or fleet?

PSG Jobs is a veteran owned and operated organization focused on connecting the best military veterans with commercial truck dealers and fleets. www.psgjobs.com

While we talk about recruiting and retaining , we need to reaffirm the impact of empowerment and the ability to take pride In quality work and improving oneself and your abilities. Gaining a new employee is only the first baby step.

I beleive it isn't a shortage of technicians, but a shortage of qualified technicians. What a great place to find the qualified technicians, that have experience and the determination.
