Solving Casing Hot spots
Internally lined GT Exhaust and HRSG casings are prone to insulation loss over time; by mechanical failures, flow and settling. Pumpable is a non-intrusive online approach to re-insulating these missing and lost pockets of insulation.
Cold casing insulation tends to breakdown over time which can lead to hotspots and gas leaks. The consequences of an ineffective insulation material on cold casings such as diffusers and HSRG’s can cause unnecessary expense and downtime should they not be dealt with early. It is not cost effective to have forced outages and waiting for a planned outage may cause more damage and cost in the long term.
The traditional repair method of cutting out sections or removal of liner plates, re-insulating and welding back together is costly and time consuming. Not knowing if it has solved the problem until the system is put back into operation and temperature is a risk, and if it requires another outage to complete further works and repairs.
The answer lies in the use of a pumpable insulation material and our team of experienced technicians with dedicated equipment.
A thermographic survey will identify the areas and high temperatures that indicate the missing insulation and the need for repair.
The nozzles that will be used for injecting the insulation will be welded during the outage while the unit is offline.
Pumpable insulation can be injected while the system is online and the benefits of the repair can be seen immediately as the temperature drops. A thermal camera will show where the insulation is having effect and the technicians will ensure the hot spot area is completely re-insulated.
The pumpable soluble fibre insulation is a mix of short fibres dispersed in high temperature binders which, upon drying, produces a strong insulation structure with low thermal conductivity.

- Low thermal conductivity (600°C - 0.09 W/mK)
- Dry density 270 kg/m3 and a wet density 1090 kg/m3
- Operation limit 1200°C with a melting point >1500°C
- Good adhesion and low shrinkage
