Energy is a crucial necessity to enable Afghanistan’s economy and sustain daily life for its 40+ million people. Energy impacts every single industry, determines its ability to provide vital products & services at affordable rates, decides cost competitiveness, and influences how well people can function in daily life.

The supply of energy – sufficient, stable and affordable – is a huge challenge in Afghanistan!

Every aspect of life and business needs electricity. Nothing works without it. The problem: Afghanistan has a huge deficit in energy and is painfully dependent on foreign countries to fill the gap. However, that does not work so well. Especially in winter times, when people & businesses are most dependent on electricity for heating, increased hours for lighting, and other operations, foreign countries notably cut back the delivery of needed energy to meet their own national needs. When electricity is short communication of Internet and phone goes often down. Entire city areas experience power shortages and black outs.

Purpose of this guidance document

This article analyzes reasons for the energy shortages. It discusses different options for better power generation, distribution, and consumption. It highlights the challenges and offers solutions. The article also proposes key success drivers for addressing the situation. Last but not least, the author offers to meet with local Afghan experts from companies, government and academics to discuss the challenges in more details, develop specific solutions, and then take actions in form of projects, staring companies, and/ or collaborating on joint task force(s).
