Solving AEC Business Challenges with No-Code and Low-Code Development
Over the years, I’ve coded apps for creativity, design, project management, and many other purposes.
My approach has been to know enough about a programming language to build a working prototype and—if customers find it valuable—have professional developers turn it into a commercial product.
An alternative to coding from scratch is using no-code/low-code platforms, which are becoming increasingly powerful with new AI features.
From prototypes to business
Prototypes have always been a solution to specific problems. For example, as a management consultant, I needed a way to let dozens or hundreds of professionals share and develop ideas in a strategy project. All the existing tools were too complicated to use or overburdened with features.
My solution was to create Idea Wall, a prototype web app that I first used successfully in my projects. Consequently, I hired a programming team to develop it into a SaaS product based on the prototype.
The app had, in 10 countries, loyal customers who used it for years.
No-code/low-code platforms are evolving fast
I have recently started using no-code or low-code tools for app development. These tools are great for prototyping but also for developing full-blown apps in-house.
They are no longer limited to enabling simple data collection through forms. The best tools offer dashboards, workflow automation, data analytics, AI-powered automation, integrations, and many other sophisticated functions.
There’s no shortage of no-code/low-code tools and platforms. G2.com has listed and scored over 320 of them. I have used or tried Quickbase, Airtable, Appy Pie, Softr, Caspio, Bubble, and Jotform, among others.
A great solution for dynamic AEC firms
I see great potential in the no-code/low-code concept in the AEC industry. With these tools and platforms, SMEs and larger firms can rapidly and affordably develop user interfaces and software to solve their specific business problems.
They can also quickly refine and modify the app without resorting to outside experts. Scaling the apps to serve the whole company or supply chain is also straightforward.
