Solutions don't stop and neither should you.

Solutions don't stop and neither should you.

Two weeks ago, SJN had its annual team retreat in a mostly-rainy-but-sometimes-beautiful Seattle. If you want to know where our heads are at since those retreat days, it's explained pretty well here. Like everyone right now, we acknowledge an immense amount of uncertainty. But, we're also incredibly inspired and committed to changing journalism. We feel a renewed passion for building deeply informative, obsessively inclusive journalism that helps people navigate the world and understand it better. What's around to help with that?

Plenty.

Here's some of what we've been sharing the past couple weeks.

The top of the Feb. 19 Above the Fold announced open applications for the Student Media Challenge. This is an opportunity for student publications and journalism schools to get funding and training to cover youth mental health through a solutions lens. And good news: The deadline has been extended to March 21. Next up, we shared "The Story So Far," an incredibly in-depth, human-centered look at news avoidance and what might be done about it from the Media Cymru team. It is emphatically worth your time. Shia Levitt and the News Ambassadors team put out a new resource for asking thoughtful questions in Spanish; International Women's Media Foundation has a few awards you can apply for; Latin America News Dispatch is accepting solutions-focused submissions; and Alfredo Casares is beautifully mingling journalism and sociology. All that can be found here.

The most recent Above the Fold features a handful of award and support opportunities for solutions journalism projects. For the latter, you can find info about SoJo and engagement grants in Chicago courtesy of Deborah Douglas and Northwestern University Medill School ; a major upcoming opportunity to pursue science reporting from European Journalism Centre (EJC) ; and open applications from Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity . As for awards, why not try to take home a trophy from Covering Climate Now or Grist ? Then, the "Tip of the Week" is actually four, with the SoJo Europe team dropping multiple tools for building a variety of financial support with solutions journalism and internal processes for building SoJo into the newsroom workflow. Plus, Latino News Network keeps doing innovative engagement around solutions reporting. Get this edition here.

Michael Davis dropped another edition of Making the Grade, and it too features the Student Media Challenge. (When it gets double time, you know we think it's important.) But this one also has some news about the SJN/ NEWSWELL at Arizona State University / Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University Solutions Journalism Educator Academy this July in Los Angeles. Both are open for applications until March 21! Find them both here.

Of course, the world of solutions journalism isn't complete without solutions stories. For those, one option is The Response. The March 6 edition celebrated International Women's Day, with a focus on women-led initiatives to build safety. You can get Andrea Navarro's exploration of Mexico City's "utopias"; Mark Obbie 's nuanced look at how one U.S. city is trying to measure gun violence prevention; and Candice Norwood and Bria Lloyd 's chronicling of how Connecticut led the way to making prison phone calls and email free for incarcerated people and their loved ones. They're all in one place.

Over at Solutions Worth Sharing, catch up on Rebecca Randall 's story about how the climate emotions wheel is teaching kids about climate change in healthy ways, or the scooters and bikes cities are enlisting to replace cars for short trips, courtesy of Sarah Sax, MESc and Joey Lautrup . Over on the democracy side, Carl Smith checks out how one library is stepping in to provide homelessness services, and Alex Burness covers how a Michigan jail has become a hub of civic engagement.

thank you so much. I love being in the know of all this. As an international educator I find relief in excellent solution journalism, and you gave me great leads again, I needed this!

Thank you! I love all of this—so much hope and passion. And now I’m especially excited about the Climate Emotions Wheel—had never heard of it before, what a fabulous concept! So tangible!!!
