Solutions for a Circular Economy / May 2023
Hello
Having just come back from the annual conferences of Waste Expo in New Orleans, USA and Waste 2023 Coffs Harbour, Australia, I feel the circular economy mindset is close to a tipping point towards mass adoption.
No-one wants to talk about waste, these days its about resource recovery. A combination of government initiatives and forward thinking enterprises are driving rapid change throughout the manufacturing and recycling sectors.
Our recent collaboration with Polycollect is an excellent example of how post consumable soft plastics, which previously would have been discarded in landfill or burned, are being reused as a sustainable and recyclable aggregate in concrete.

ANZPAC circular economy report for plastic?
The ANZPAC (Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands) Impact Report provides a vital assessment of the region's advancements on their Plastics Pact towards establishing a circular economy for plastic.
Among the four main targets in the pact, target 3 is focused on increasing the plastic packaging collection rate to 25%, with a rate of 17% recorded to date in the report.
“Put simply, more needs to be done. Co-operation across the industry and with governments across the region will be critical to driving change, particular in those areas in need of significant investment in recycling infrastructure.”

Canadian e-waste has tripled
New research finds that Canada’s electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) has more than tripled in the last two decades, generating close to a million tons in 2020 alone.
The University of Waterloo researchers completed the first comprehensive estimate of e-waste in Canada to understand its lifecycle, from sales of electronic items to e-waste generation. Their findings reveal that the e-waste generation per person has increased from 8.3 kg in 2000 to 25.3 kg in 2020.

EU’s ambitious circular material use rate targets
The EU is not on track to achieve its 2030 target of 23.4% circular material use rate (CMUR) - a measure of all materials used from recycled waste.
From 2010 to 2021 there has been a modest increase in this rate, from 10.8 to 11.7% across the EU-27. The rates vary between countries from as high as 34% to as low as 1%.
Waste recycling is an important area of focus towards this target, but this alone will not be sufficient. Additional measures, such as decreasing material inputs and cutting fossil fuel resource use are also required to get there.
