Solutions for Change and Optimism
Alliance to End Plastic Waste
We envision a world without plastic waste in the environment, driven by a functioning circular economy.
So many reasons for optimism
Any great challenge—especially the plastic waste one—requires a significant and concerted effort by as many parties as possible everywhere. It also requires optimism that rests on belief and trust that it can and will be met.??
We have just released our 2023 Progress Report Advancing Circularity: Solutions for Change and I am pleased to share some key messages.?
?
In 2023, we continued to work with our project partners, governments, members and other stakeholders, to strengthen our early foundations. As more projects came onstream, we continued to ‘stress test’ every aspect of them, including the way we collect and validate data, working with independent assurers.??
The Alliance’s key indicators of success include:??
These terms apply to all the projects that we are engaged with. Since 2019, we have tested more than 80 solutions that will make a positive impact on the environment and communities, and we’ve learnt invaluable lessons. These learnings are reflected in our Solution Models, which show what is possible and necessary.
The first two Solution Models were published earlier this year. The first is about unlocking value through basic manual sorting of waste, based on Alliance projects in Brazil, China, Indonesia and Kenya. The second is about engaging households in segregated municipal waste collection, and is based on our projects in Argentina, China, India and Indonesia.??

This change must happen if impact is to be at scale and sustainable. ? ??
In 2023, we continued to test and finesse solutions that create actual systems change. One example which we are especially proud of is the Let’s Transform initiative in India. Driving it is a mission-driven enterprise – Saahas Waste Management Private Limited (SWPL) – committed to build ethical supply chains while diverting low-value plastic from landfills and water bodies.??
Just past Phase 2, the focus has been on social inclusion for India’s informal waste sector which manages more than 90% of the country’s domestic waste, estimated at 63 million tonnes a year and growing exponentially. Yet those in the sector – five million – often work in hazardous conditions, are financially exploited and shunned in society.??
The project has to date worked with five micro-entrepreneurs in Bengaluru, Delhi, Kochi, Pandhurna, and Coimbatore. Financial and managerial support has resulted in a host of building block benefits: formalised businesses, cleaner, safer working conditions, higher recovery rates of low-value plastics and diversion away from landfills and water bodies, and training in bookkeeping, health and safety, labour laws, and responsible waste management practices. The micro-entrepreneurs use Saahas’ digital traceability tool, TRACER, to track the end-to-end movement of plastic waste, providing transparency and data.??
All of these amazing outcomes are being documented for the Alliance – for this is surely a 360 solution that lends itself naturally to scaling and replicating. A clear starting vision which was enabled to be scaled and strengthened for greater impact – does this resonate with you??

In closing, I hark back to optimism, for which there are so many reasons as we journey forward together. I know that you will feel the same as you read the report.?

3 个月It was refreshing to discover a report that read like the transparent output of an Organization now comfortable in its own skin. While I would prefer the Alliance not only attack the Plastic Waste Crisis by supporting Solutions directly addressing the cascading environmental damage as it manifests in the 'Present.' Rather than redefine the show, we may infer the Alliance intends to continue acting the role of International Janitor, focusing energy on improving waste management, engineering improved recycling infrastructure, supporting the latest global ingenuity that helps extinguish plastic's longevity footprint, such as use cases successfully embedding plastic within building elements, and other mitigations. Toward the end of the Report the following statement is made " today we are focused on developing a circular economy for plastic and convene more than 70 companies across the plastic value chain " I believe this direct and clear explanation of what the Alliance can be expected to focus on should be broadly appreciated. To its credit, the "Alliance" report well documents tremendous quantifiable impact, delivered on its own terms, and impressive at what it does.

3 个月Thank you for this report which highlight great initiatives and enlarge the potential solutions. With REPLACE we would want to bring new possibilties, focusing on the recycling of complex, multi-component plastics. The company has developed a patented technology that transforms these challenging plastics into high-quality, low-carbon composite profiles. This technology is designed to complement existing recycling methods by expanding WW the possibilities for recycling materials that were previously non-recyclable in an industrial and performant model.
