Suicide Prevention in Construction
Every year, during September — National Suicide Prevention Month — the construction industry dedicates a week to raising awareness about the unique challenges workers face in construction that lead to suicide and what we can do to prevent it.
April Moss, COO of Digibuild, tells her heartfelt story about her father, which exemplifies the impact of work-related stress on mental health and the families of construction workers.
Though my father loved his job in construction as a construction contractor, he struggled throughout his career with the inconsistency with work, timely payments, and the lack of access to larger projects. Over time, this consistent stress wore him down. As a result, when I was 9 years old, he committed suicide.
Unfortunately, her story isn't unusual.
Construction has 4-5x suicides than any other industry.
Together, we can save lives.
Learn more about how to prevent mental illness crises by spreading awareness of prevention and how to break the stigma around mental health and suicide prevention in the construction industry.
Build Expo USA & Upcoming Events
Last week, our founder, Rob Salvador, spoke at the Build Expo USA in Los Angeles.
We will also be attending the following events:
Construction Cost Trend
According to a July 2022 report for CBRE, several factors are driving rising construction costs.
The cost index forecasts a 14.1% year-over-year increase in construction costs. Escalation is forecasted to stabilize at the 2%-4% range for 2023 and 2024.
Labor shortages are expected to persist in the near term.
CBRE predicts construction demand is expected to remain strong in the near term.
Although the possibility of an economic downturn is still looming,? pent-up demand for new construction should largely sustain activity.
Construction Materials Worth Saving
With materials prices remaining at record highs and lead times being what they are, it is worth considering construction materials that can be saved,? repaired, or reused. ?Materials that are rehabbed or created from waste products can lower costs, keep the unique character of a building and reduce environmental pollution. Demand for alternative building materials also stems from increased sustainability awareness created by LEED building practices.?
Some of the most popular materials include:
We are fortunate to have the technology to make searching for used materials of classic elements at our fingertips. According to For Construction Pros, the alternative building products market is expected to grow at 6% by 2030.

Construction brings together large teams to deliver the built environments, but the industry is constantly riddled with complexity and regulations. The industry has always been wary of change. The tide is finally turning.
These large teams are beginning to embrace technology and are finding it harder than ever to work without it.
Blockchain is a decentralized database that chronologically and securely records transactions. There are many different types of blockchain, but "Enterprise" or business blockchain use cases are perfect for construction.
