A Solution for Rural Women's Health

Improving Rural Women's Healthcare

Heartland Clinics of America, Inc

ACCESS TO GOOD HEALTHCARE IS OUR MISSION

Heartland Clinics of America, Inc. is in close partnership and collaboration with United Healthcare Group. We will make a difference in healthcare!?

Women’s Health

Women living in rural areas face a host of health disparities, including higher rates of chronic disease. In Alabama, for example, cervical cancer was the leading cause of death for women, with black women twice as likely to die from it as white women. Alabama also has the nation's third highest maternal mortality rate. Rural mothers face an array of health challenges, including premature birth, low birth weight, and increased risk for postpartum depression, a leading cause of suicide in women.

Black, Native American, and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Healthcare providers play a key role in addressing social determinants of health, which can directly impact maternal mortality improvement. (https://www.awhonn.org/)

Current Needs

Rural women are also more likely to lack access to reproductive healthcare services. The number of gynecologic health providers per capita is significantly lower than that in metropolitan areas. In addition, rural women face higher rates of unintended pregnancy and female sterilization. Having limited access to healthcare options is a real barrier to a woman's health. That is why we started Heartland Clinics.

The shortage of rural OB/GYNs is a major concern for rural women. Only about half of rural counties nationwide have a practicing OB/GYN. This lack of access can lead to higher rates of maternal and infant mortality. This lack of access to OB/GYNs also makes postpartum care difficult. In America, according to the U.S. General Accounting Office statistics, women's maternity mortality rates are at .238 deaths per 1,000 deaths compared to .146 in larger metropolitan areas.?

Our Solution

Using mobile clinics and advanced telehealth programs, Heartland Clinics of America, Inc will improve the wellness of rural women by providing more effective and comprehensive access to general and reproductive healthcare. Women in rural areas need both preventive and routine care. These services are essential for reducing health risks during and after pregnancy. Women without insurance need access to routine health care to avoid complications during and post childbirth. It is also important for women to have access to hospital-based care, which may include cancer screenings and obstetrics. For the women who comprise a large part of the 35 million Americans who live two hours or more from the closest hospital, we can provide much of those services on Heartland's Mobile Clinics and our partners, major hospitals, and specialists via advanced telehealth. ?

Our Board directors and advisors are proven healthcare leaders.?Our Chief Medical Officer is a former U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu, MD, MPH. We are also fortunate to have Michael Trujillo, MD, MPH, and former U.S. Indian Health Services Director as an advisor.?

Some initiatives have improved the health and education of rural women. Heartland Clinics will embrace and include any valuable programs online and at our clinics, both in English and in Spanish, with other languages added as needed. We intend to team with each state's medical schools, hospital systems and local physicians to be the bridge between them and the patients that need them. Heartland will also partner with Medicaid, Medicare, and health insurance providers. Communities and organizations can partner with Heartland to initiate these programs and initiatives to improve the lives of rural women. By partnering with the local volunteer fire departments and their EMTs/Paramedics, we can provide more services to communities that had given up on the chance to have good healthcare. ?

I am so happy to see the progress that is being made by Heartland Clinics of America. Having lost my mother to cancer last month, this is a mission that rings true to my heart. So many people are not receiving routine care that would eliminate unnecessary deaths. Hats off to you for your passion is seeing this project through. ???? ???? ????

Outstanding! It’s unbelievable that cervical cancer can still be a leading cause of death in a developed nation. Routine screenings can almost always detect dysplasia and allow management to prevent progression to cancer. Thank you for this valuable program! #healthequity
