What it takes to get to self-employed mastery may be easier than you think.

True statement.

But, easy?

No way.

What you need to know falls into 3 groupings.

1) Master yourself and your business before hiring experts in social media, marketing, or sales

I've worked with top experts from all over the world.

Until I knew myself, where I was headed, and whom I'm building the company for nothing worked.

Here's a tip you can use right away.

Place your customer on the grid.

What do they want the most?

Our ideal customer wants mastery.

Wants to be in charge of themselves. Has smarts. Ideas and vision. Get it?

We got clarity, which you must have to succeed.

We discussed how this works Thursday at the Solopreneur Inc. Forum. Let me know if you want the replay.

2) Find the people who share your passion and build your company with them

Don't chase people whom you won't enjoy being around.

LinkedIn and other platforms opened up a global marketplace for me.

I'm surrounded by people whom I enjoy, share my values, and respect my non-conventional approach to self-employment.

Leaning into being myself in public without fear allows me to find them.

Being honest keeps everybody else away.

I'm not being a jerk when I turn away clients. I'm respecting my desire to only be around people willing to do the hard personal work to master themselves and their business.

No easy 7-step foolproof systems here.

3) Avoid step-by-step coaching systems that worked for a lot of others doing what you are doing

This controversial statement comes from knowledge.

I've followed some of these gurus.

I've bought their courses.

I've tried to validate their theories.

Here's why they don't work.

When you take this approach you design an outcome that looks the same as everybody else who followed the guaranteed to succeed system.

It does work.

For those who learned directly from them years ago in private groups or one-to-one mastermind sessions.

Now, it's old hat.

Here are a few quotes that inspired me this week.

1) "When you understand the potential archetypal power of your product, marketing becomes much simpler, more rewarding, and worthier of respect" Margaret Mark and Carol Pearson

I'm still obsessed with their book The Hero and the Outlaw.

It's changed my thinking.

It's become a core part of what we are teaching. It anchored me and provided massive clarity to my company.

The world's top brands read this book and use this system.

You don't need to be Nike or Amazon to do the same.

2) "List out all your excuses, tear them up, learn to focus on the issues inside you not around you"Jim Rohn

Nothing much new or exciting here.

But look deeper.

The word list matters.

Do the work.

Don't learn the concept.

I wrote my list.

Will you?

Great points made, Larry. I have a set of what I call 'killer questions' for onboading new clients. Young businesses can really struggle to provide answers about esssential elements like the pain points of their ideal clients. And getting a one-line 'man in the pub' description of their businesses can be painful. I mock not. We've all been there. But, yes, clarity is key. ??

Yep, anyone who says it's easy is probably just "teaching" and is not actually walking their talk, Larry Kaul.
