Solo Succeeds with Niche Referrals and Instagram Boosts with Attorney Edward Arthur
For Edward Arthur – who runs a prosperous bail bond litigation and criminal defense solo in San Diego – social and referrals have both proven to be effective marketing channels.
They work together, with his social posts keeping him top of mind with his referral sources. In this interview, Arthur teaches us:
Referrals – How he built his referral network – What he does to stay top of mind with his network – How he works to grow the network
Social media – How he is affordably growing his number of followers – How he engages with comments – How many clients he receives from Instagram
Here are 6 takeaways from my interview with Edward:
1. Niche opportunities are frequently worth grasping.?
I have interviewed several attorneys who serendipitously landed in their prosperous niches, but Edward is the first one of them who obtains so much business from so few sources.? An advantage to narrow niches is little competition; a disadvantage is the potential for legislative or other seismic changes yanking demand away.? Bail has been subject to this risk.
2. Extra communication with referral sources pays.?
Having a few large referral sources makes staying in close touch easier for Edward and his team, and they remain in daily phone contact.? Most lawyers have a larger number of infrequent referrers to deal with, so outreach to them has to be more intentional.? Calendaring regular touch points can help keep that contact regular.?
3. A robust social presence can amplify referrals.?
Edward astutely recognized and pointed out that his fast-growing Instagram account is helping keep him top of mind with referral sources.? Other interviewees have also mentioned this side benefit, and some have used their social presence to greatly expand their referral networks.

4. Engaging with social commenters is critical. ?
I love that Edward’s team starts each workday by checking for comments worth responding to.? Timely engagement with active followers is key to generating business from your Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok account, for some of those comments will turn into business.? Unfortunately, many lawyers drop the ball here and then wonder why they aren’t getting clients from their social profiles.?
5. Missed opportunity. ?
Criminal defense, like employment and family, is a legal topic with wide social appeal.? If I was Edward’s social media manager, I would encourage him to educate viewers on their legal rights – what to do if the police knock on your door, how to respond when your car is pulled over, what to say if the police ask if you have been drinking, what can you legally do if harassed or attacked on the street, and so on.? Those videos would have high organic appeal, draw large views, and pull in more potential clients.
6. Boosting is materially accelerating Edward’s social growth. ?
Edward’s large and growing follower count is a wonderful example of how helpful boosting can be.? Even though he is not posting high-view videos like the ones I just mentioned, Edward has a sizable following which continues growing.? I attribute that growth to the several hundred dollars he is spending each month on boosting his Reels.?
