The solo SEO learning journey can be hard

The solo SEO learning journey can be hard

Did you know that every day, people make more than 5.6 billion searches on Google alone?

Think of it like this: your website is a treasure chest, and SEO is the map that helps people find it. But here's the thing – many folks try to figure out this map on their own, and it can be a real challenge.

It's like trying to find your way through a big, confusing maze.

Learning SEO by yourself might seem like a good idea, but it often leads to feeling stuck and not knowing what to do.

So, let's talk about the journey of learning SEO on your own, and the obstacles you might encounter along the way.

Why people choose to learn SEO solo?

Learning SEO on your own is a path many choose to take, and there are a couple of reasons why.

  • First, some folks want to be self-reliant, like the do-it-yourselfers who build their own furniture or fix their own cars. They see SEO as a skill they can learn, much like any other.
  • Second, budget constraints can play a role. Hiring professionals for SEO services can be expensive, especially for freelancers and small business owners who are watching their expenses closely. That's why you'll find quite a few freelancers and small business owners taking the plunge into the world of SEO solo. They understand that having a good online presence can make a big difference in attracting customers, and they're willing to learn the ropes to make it happen.
  • Third, there are so many resources out there about SEO and the best strategies to start learning.

The pain points of learning solo

When I first started learning SEO, I remember feeling so overwhelmed with all the information around me. I didn′t know what was important to learn, and what was not. I had no idea where should I focus myself, or what part of SEO I enjoyed the most.

And then, I hired a coach! And everything got cleared!

I have asked what are the struggles of learning SEO on your own, and here are the top struggles they face:

  • Information Overload: There's so much SEO advice out there that it's like having a giant library at your disposal, but without a librarian to guide you. You might end up feeling lost in a sea of resources, not knowing which one to pick up.
  • Time-Consuming: Learning SEO all by yourself can be a real time-eater. It's like trying to learn a new hobby while managing your everyday life. You'll need to find extra hours in the day to research, experiment, and figure out the SEO puzzle.
  • Technical Hurdles: SEO can get pretty technical with terms like "robots.txt" and "backlinks." It's like trying to learn a new language without a dictionary, making it challenging for newcomers to grasp the concepts. Learning how to debug a messy website is like learning a new skill, like playing a musical instrument or fixing a car, and that can be intimidating. You build the base of the website, and trust me, 70% of the wedsites out there have serious technical issues (missed opportunity to learn technical SEO).

  • Lack of knowledge: Yes, you know "some SEO" but the most common questions beginners have is "How many keywords should I target? 10 is enough? How many keywords a page should have?"If you have these types of questions, you probably know 0 about keywords. Return to basics.
  • Lack of Feedback: When you're learning SEO on your own, you often miss out on valuable feedback.
  • Constantly Changing Landscape: SEO is like a moving target. Search engines update their algorithms regularly, and what works one day might not work the next. It's a bit like trying to hit a bullseye on a dartboard that keeps changing its shape. But the basics will be probably here for a long time.
  • Poor connection between market research and SEO: SEO is not "just do this, fix that, rank for that keyword" etc. No!It is heavily connected with the commerciality of the business model, market research, client feedback for their business and their unique selling point, building the ICA (ideal customer avatar), business goals, and tracking results. Beginners often do not have access to that type of information.
  • Overwhelm from Tools: SEO involves using various tools for keyword research, analytics, and optimization. Learning how to use these tools effectively can feel like learning to operate a complex machinery without an instruction manual. You don't need 100s of tools to do your job. Only 5-6 and plenty of manual work. Tools are not Gods. Get dirty with manual search and work.
  • Lack of Structured Learning: Many SEO resources are scattered across the internet, making it challenging to follow a structured learning path. It's similar to trying to assemble a puzzle without knowing where to start or having a picture to guide you.
  • Fear of Making Mistakes: SEO mistakes can lead to penalties or a drop in rankings, and the fear of making such errors can be paralyzing. It's like walking on a tightrope without a safety net – one wrong step, and you could fall.

I can continue all day long talking about the pain points, but I'll stop here.??

How a coach can help you overcome all the above-mentioned struggles?

?Are you starting your SEO career?

?Are you looking for a learning SEO to sell to your existing clients as an extra service?

?Do you want to learn how to grow your website using SEO and stop paying tons of money for ads?

?Do you want to learn SEO but not know where to start?

An experienced coach who has been involved in SEO projects, and still does, might be the solution to your problem.

What are the perks on investing in a coach:

Structured Learning Path: An SEO coach provides a structured curriculum tailored to your level, ensuring you learn the fundamentals before moving on to more advanced topics.

Clarification of difficult concepts: Your coach demystifies SEO, making it easier to understand complex concepts, much like a language teacher simplifies grammar rules.

Real-Time Updates: Staying up to date with algorithm changes is a coach's job. They'll guide you through adjustments needed as algorithms evolve, saving you from the frustration of guesswork.

Curated Resources: Coaches provide trusted and relevant resources, sparing you the daunting task of sifting through the avalanche of online information.

Personalized Feedback: You'll receive feedback on your SEO efforts, helping you correct mistakes and improve your strategies, akin to a sports coach refining your technique.

Efficient Tool Usage: Coaches teach you how to effectively use SEO tools, maximizing their benefits and saving you time and effort.

Time Management: They help you prioritize SEO tasks within your schedule, ensuring you're not overwhelmed, similar to a time management coach assisting you with work-life balance.

Performance Monitoring: Coaches track your website's performance and provide data-driven insights, taking the guesswork out of measuring your SEO success.

Confidence Building: With an SEO coach, you gain confidence in your abilities, knowing you're on the right path, just as a life coach helps boost self-assurance.

In a nutshell, learning SEO all by yourself can be really tough because of things like rankings going up and down, confusing updates, too much information, and it takes a lot of time.

Getting help from an SEO coach or training program can make it easier.

It's like having a map and a guide when you're on a tricky hike.

The guide helps you avoid wrong turns and keeps you safe.

Learning SEO with a coach is similar – they guide you through the tricky parts.

I'd love to know your thoughts in the comments.

One of the biggest struggles of mine:: Choosing sources for SEO advice with authenticity and expertise ... Have to say most of the issue influencers don't even know the fundamentals of search ranking and search engine computers...! 2018, 2019, 2020 where the horrible years for me when I follow blindly almost every is advise to achieve results... My life in SEO started shifting I realise learning SEO from search engines patents and case studies are the best way to learn it... ??SEO is not a opinion based approach but scientific.

This is great, Stevy - thanks for sharing this! The general, but not super specific knowledge is what was hard for me at first. I knew the general idea of what needed to be done, but not specifics. For example, exactly what you mentioned with knowing that you need to target keywords on each page, but how many? That kind of stuff!
