Solids Content on Spray Drying
How does the slurry solids content affects the granules formation on spray drying
This article provides some illustrations of the difference on granules size while spray drying varying the solids content.
Spray drying equipment vary in size, throughput and the atomization method, as the ones Powder Processing & Technology (PPT) and CinChemPro (CCP) have.
As a rule of thumb, the higher the solids content of the slurry, the higher the throughput, but in the case your material has strict granules size limits, an adjustment on the solids content might be needed to have your production in spec.
Higher Solids Content: Illustration of a high solids content droplet being dried
To better show this difference, a lower solids content slurry is shown in the next illustration, so it can be visually compared with the higher solids content droplet.
Lower Solids Content: Illustration of a low solids content droplet being dried
The droplet formation will mostly depend on the solids content of the slurry, the viscosity and the flow of slurry coming in to the wheel atomizer or the spray nozzle.
In conclusion, the solids content is directly proportional to the granules size in spray drying.
