A Solid Win in Shifting Times: Flipping to How We Receive Ideas

A Solid Win in Shifting Times: Flipping to How We Receive Ideas

A solid win in shifting times is to intentionally go with the natural flow that we receive ideas.

As organisational leaders, it is our role to be communicating ideas that are going to be making a difference. And leaders quite often share with me the frustration that, there is a really good idea that will make a big difference but has not yet been taken up.

What I suggest is that these moments to flip and think about how we receive ideas.

There's a point where you go:

Hmm… did I hear that?

Yeah, I think I have heard that idea.

That might be worth considering in my situation.

Yeah, I think that could be really useful.

I'm giving that a go.

That was good.

That's how I do things.

?

There's a natural curve, that these things go up for ourselves.

1.???? Contact

2.???? Awareness

3.???? Understanding

4.???? Positive Perception

5.???? Adoption

6.???? Embedded

7.???? Internalisation

?

What I suggest in the coming quarter, pick one or two of your really important ideas and look ahead to find opportunities that you can take others on this path.

?

What are you doing to remain fit for purpose as the environment shifts?

Thanks Bernie Such a super interesting topic and touches many areas of what makes great leaders. What makes a great idea great and how do you get traction In a world where ideas are definitely not in shortage? Often its like that Product - market fit paradigm. So the idea- market fit maybe ! You might have the right product (idea) but it’s just not the time , so you keep the powder dry until the time is right! And often its just pure capacity - the busyness of the now doesn’t allow for changing something for the next. Also a key role of leadership is to create that space for others to step forward and lead with their ideas.

Great stuff as always Bernie. Its a little weird how I see the Kübler-Ross Grieving model in this piece where the Commitment phase aligns with the acceptance phase of the 'new world', or new way of thinking. I feel this can be helpful as it helps us empathise with people struggling to take on new ways of thinking we see as easy/logical/obvious.

I love how this switch in thinking about how we receive ideas opens empathy for others and a lot more clarity in the space we need to create for others. Do you utlise similar?
