One of the most ingenious facts about Solid Surface is that, to a certain extent it can be re-purposed.
How?
If you decide that you are going to completely refurbish your premises, it is possible to remove the existing Solid Surface worktops, and (within reason) rework these to reuse again, using the correct fabrication techniques.
Not only that but the offcuts of the material can also be used so that wastage can be minimised.
How can this be achieved?
Solid Surface is an entirely man-made material, with the ability to cut, shape, and manipulate into shapes and sizes. This means that the material can be joined together, with inconspicuous seams, creating an entirely new item.
Before I move on to what can be created using off-cut Solid Surface material, please take a quick read of my previous newsletter, which is all about the sustainability of this product.
What sort of items can be created using off-cut material?
There are many items that can be made using off-cut Solid Surface, many that are not always even considered. I have listed a few here below, just to provide some examples.
- Window cills
- Door thresholds
- Coasters
- Chopping Boards
- Trivets
- Coffee tables
- Menu holders

The piece de resistance is this impressive train, that my father David Bailey , founder of BSF Solid Surfaces Ltd created, using off-cuts of Solid Surface, many years ago.
This is still holding pride of place in our showroom in Brentwood, Essex. ??
Solid Surface has so many advantages, including the ability to take the leftover material, and rather than adding to landfill, finding other uses for it, even if it at first does seem a bit outlandish.
