Solaris Wins Major Tender for Double-Articulated Electric Buses in Liège!

The Belgian city of Liège is set to take a significant step toward sustainable urban transport, as Solaris secures a tender to supply 45 double-articulated Urbino 24 electric buses for Wallonia’s regional transport network, TEC. This order marks Solaris's largest win for double-articulated buses to date, with the first 18 units already on order.

A New Era for Urban Mobility in Belgium

The 24-meter Urbino electric buses, known for their unique MetroStyle design, will bring high passenger capacity and zero-emission transport to Liège. Designed specifically for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, these buses are equipped to handle high-frequency routes while enhancing the quality of life for city residents by reducing urban emissions.

Key Features:

  • Next-Generation Batteries: Each bus is equipped with Solaris High Energy batteries (approx. 800 kWh) for extended range and reliability.
  • Advanced Safety: 270° camera systems, enhanced visibility through cameras instead of traditional mirrors, and driver-assistance systems ensure safety and improved operations.
  • Passenger Comfort: Modern LED lighting, 50 seats, USB chargers, and a spacious design contribute to a comfortable, efficient ride.

Olivier Michard, Chief Commercial Officer at Solaris Bus & Coach , highlighted the impact of this order: “We are especially delighted to deliver Urbino 24 electric buses in the unique MetroStyle design to Liège. These exceptional zero-emission buses will support sustainable and convenient public transport in the city.”

Timeline and Future Impact

The first 5 buses are expected to arrive in Liège in 2025, with the remaining 13 units in 2026. With TEC’s commitment to sustainable transport, these buses represent a pivotal step in promoting cleaner, more efficient public transport in Belgium.

Did you know? The 24-meter Solaris model was first unveiled at Busworld Europe 2019 and was developed exclusively for zero-emission vehicles. To date, Solaris has delivered 50 double-articulated units, including electric models in Aalborg, Denmark, and trolleybuses for Prague and Bratislava.

This order reflects the growing demand for innovative, environmentally friendly solutions in public transport. Solaris’s contribution aligns perfectly with the goals of cities and regions looking to combat climate change and reduce urban congestion.
