Solar Light Tube Precursors: A Legacy from back in the days
In the pursuit of sustainable and environmentally conscious living, we often find ourselves looking to the future for innovative solutions. But what if making the most of natural light and promoting sustainability isn't a new phenomenon at all? It dates back centuries, with Byzantine and Ottoman architects employing ingenious techniques to capture and utilize sunlight long before "green" became the architectural buzzword of our times.
Did you know that the first prototypes of Solar Light Tubes came from centuries ago?
Over a millennium ago, Byzantine architecture recognized the value of natural light in their designs, but their significance went far beyond aesthetics. These domes were carefully engineered to capture and diffuse sunlight throughout the interiors of churches, monasteries, and other sacred structures, aiming not only to illuminate their buildings but also to celebrate the divine within them. Light symbolized divine presence and played a central role in Byzantine religious practices.
One exceptional example of this ancient practice can be found in Thessaloniki, Greece, in the form of the Yahudi Hamam – Ottoman Pazar Hamam. This is a 16th-century Ottoman bath, also known as the “Bath of the Jews”, due to its location in the former Jewish section of the city. This bathhouse, designed for relaxation and purification, incorporates the same principles of Solar Light Tubes: allowing natural light to penetrate the interior spaces, creating an atmosphere of serenity and comfort. In this installation, the small oval domes are made of glass and stand out from the roof tiles, creating a curious effect seen from the exterior.
This is only one example from these days. During the Ottoman era, the first prototypes of Solar Light Tubes continued to evolve, particularly in Turkish baths, where sustainability and functionality merged seamlessly in architectural design. This historical use of Solar Light Tubes is a testament to the importance of harnessing natural light and promoting sustainability, long before these concepts became part of our everyday vocabulary.
Based on these ancient concepts, light transmission systems have been developed and adapted to today's growing needs, such as maximizing the capture of sunlight and reducing sound and thermal transmission between inside and outside. Chatron Solar Light Tubes answer to today’s needs and comply with current legislation.
Chatron Solar Light Tubes: maximizing the sunlight transmission
