Soil testing
In a recent post I suggested that anybody planting a garden get their soil tested. This is stressed in Master Gardener programs as well. I followed through with our own greenhouse soil, which was tested by Colorado State University Extension Service Labs and followed up by recommendations:

I also came across a very good article on why this is important and what happens to the chemical composition of soils after growing crops:
From my own experience, when plants are vegetating and growing leaves, nitrogen the availability of nitrogen in soils becomes important. When plants are flowering, broccoli for example, phosphorus should be added. Good luck with your tests!

If not call them for one. They will instruct you on how to gather soil samples.
