Soil

Soil

Soil is always taken for granted but is very crucial in our daily lives. It serves as the foundation of life on Earth, providing us with vital services that sustain our ecosystems, agriculture, and even our daily routines. We hardly think about soil, but it touches almost all aspects of our lives.

One of the most significant functions of soil is supporting plant life. Plants require soil to provide them with water, nutrients, and a stable environment in which their roots can survive. These plants provide us with the food we eat: fruits and vegetables, grains, and legumes. Without fertile soil, the crops that we depend on for nutrition would not thrive, and our food systems would collapse.

Soil also controls water. It absorbs rainfall, prevents flooding by absorbing excess water, and filters water, keeping it clean. Healthy soil also holds water in a way that supports plant growth during dry periods, ensuring a consistent supply of food. It acts like a natural water reservoir that supports life during both wet and dry seasons.

Soil is crucial for the environment aside from being important for agriculture. It supports vast arrays of organisms consisting of microorganisms, insects, and animals to facilitate biodiversity. Healthy soils play a key role in carbon sequestration, where carbon dioxide trapped in the atmosphere helps combat climate change.

In addition, soil is used in the production of materials we use every day, from building supplies to clothing. Natural fibres like cotton, linen, and wool come from plants and animals that depend on healthy soil.

In the last 150 years, half of the planet's topsoil has been lost. In the last 40 years, nearly 33% of the planet's arable land has been lost to erosion or pollution.

Land fertility is proportional to the amount of humus present. Humus contains nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, necessary for most plants. In a nutshell, soil is crucial to our survival and quality of life. Recognizing its importance and committing to its conservation will ensure a healthy and sustainable future for generations to come.

Fertility and health of soil depend on the chemical usage on land, water and the air.

As a conscious consumer when we demand chemical-free / organic produce the butterfly effect of goodness towards clean soil, water and air as a reality manifests.
