IT Software development: DevOps Roadmap and Maturity Assessment

IT Software development: DevOps Roadmap and Maturity Assessment

Over the last decade, the concept of DevOps has become increasingly popular in software development. More than 50% of enterprises now apply DevOps to some extent in their portfolio. But how deep and how successful is your DevOps implementation?

Time to take a step back and assess your DevOps maturity. Triple EEE IT Services can help!

The DevOps Roadmap allows an organization to assess where they are on the road to DevOps. In addition, it provides a sequence of logical steps to take in case one wants to embark on the road to DevOps. The picture below shows the high level steps.

Value Proposition

Implementation of DevOps is the most effective way of breaking down the traditional barriers between business and IT development, and between IT development and support. As a result, value from IT solutions is delivered faster and with a higher quality and dependability.

Approach

The introduction of an agile way of working and the switch from projects to products brings business and IT development closer together. The product owner acts as the linking pin. The product backlog is the communication vehicle. Optimization of the deployment pipeline and bringing the Dev and Ops people together in one team ensures faster delivery, higher quality, and continuity of support of the product.

How we can help you

Our support is provided by different specialists, depending on the phase of the roadmap.

In step 1, our Agile coaches provide help with implementing an agile methodology like Scrum.

In step 2, they help you find the right product owners and teach them how to engage with business representatives and define a product backlog.

In step 3, our technology specialists work with your engineers or developers to implement automation, testing, and continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD).

In step 4, our change management consultants help you bring the two cultures of Dev and Ops together in one, high performing team. While our agile coaches help them finetune their operating model.

Timelines

The effort and lead time needed to go through the different steps is highly dependent on your organization’s maturity in this area.

If your teams have never worked agile, the implementation of an agile way of working may easily take multiple months. If team members already have agile experience, it may be as simple as organizing a refresher course to get everyone on the same page.

Finding product owners is easy if the organization already has people that – formally or informally – act as a linking pin between business and IT. Coaching them will be low effort. If new PO’s need to be hired, the hiring process needs to be added to the lead time.

Optimization of the deployment pipeline is highly dependent on the number of products, the number and complexity of the pipelines, and the underlying IT infrastructure. We offer a deployment pipeline assessment that provides insight in the total effort and lead time.

Bringing people from different backgrounds together can be hard to do, but easy to plan. Given the right guidance and context, teams will get to know each other and learn to trust each other in 2 to 3 months. We advise to let our consultant attend the team’s ceremonies in those first months. After which they are expected to do it on their own

Options

Not all organizations have to go through all the steps. Some may already be working agile and have products defined. Others are still doing waterfall projects. All the services related to the different steps can be requested separately and have no interdependency. However, it is not recommended to change the sequence of the steps in the roadmap. The sequence is very deliberate and based on years of experience with these types of changes. Immediately jumping to CI/CD or DevOps implementation without working agile on projects, has a very high chance of failure.

We are happy to assess your organization’s specific situation and come to a joint conclusion on what types of services are most appropriate for you.
