Software Cropping - Oh, So Close!
If you're a tech nerd like me, you've noticed that iOS has a new feature that will let you crop objects from images with just a touch of the screen. Sounds great, right? Well, yes and no. I recently received a picture from a client of his Chevy Nova that I had created a Car Show Board for, with the board in front of the car.
Instinctively, I hopped into Photoshop to crop it so that I could use it for future promotional items... and here's what I had in about 10 minutes.
Now for the fun part! I saved the photo in my camera roll on my phone and opened it up in Photos. One tap on the car and it isolated the car and let me copy it, Went into Mail, pasted it, and got this as a .png file
At first glance it looks decent... perhaps usable in some small images, but when you really look at it you can tell there's just no way the software crop could be used in anything for high quality like video or print. Your lines just are not crisp, your images have some horrible gradients around the object (tires are absolutely horrible).

To be fair, I've been cropping out cars for a good while now, and the technology has gotten A LOT better. But it doesn't hold a candle to doing it yourself, where you know what's car, and what's ground and shadow, where you know how the body lines of a car flow even when the car and background colors are similar. Yes it takes more time, but the results speak for themselves. And having that finished product in your library for use down the road makes the extra time and effort worth it!!
The moral of the story... rely on your skills, not on your tools!
