Soft spot for a slice

Soft spot for a slice

I must confess, I’ve got a soft spot for a slice of pizza.

And I don’t think I’m alone.

As any pizza aficionado will tell you though – there’s pizza and there’s pizza, and we recently did a design job for a business that absolutely deals in the latter.

Amante Del Cibo is based inside Simply Fresh (the organic grocery store in Kenilworth).

Their stonebaked pizzas are the business, making Lockdown 3.0 more bearable for the ‘Herd Clan’, and while munching on a slice, I was transported back to my childhood in Woking.

Long before the days of Deliveroo or JustEat, you couldn’t just order in a pizza – if you wanted one in Woking, you had to head to Piccolini’s.

From the outside, it might have looked like any other pizzeria, but from the moment you walked through the door, the experience began.

The waiter came over, talked you through the menu and you made your choice.

Then the amazing Italian artisans set to work.

Like magicians, they began crafting the ball of dough into a side-plate-sized shape and in one motion they spun it high above their heads, letting go of it momentarily, and spinning it even quicker so that the dough stretched even further.

A second or two later the dough was sufficiently aerated and back on the pizza peel, loaded and heading towards the wood fired oven.

Moments later, the waiters crowded around placing the plated pizzas in front of us ready to devour.

It was superb artistry of circus-like proportions with two final acts to follow – the offer of a drizzle of chilli oil, a spoonful of parmesan cheese and the obligatory couple of turns of the black pepper mill that was as long as your leg.

Yes, it tasted great, but it was the product delivery that really made it – it’s what made them notorious, and made us keep coming back.

Pizza’s pretty universal these days, but Piccolini’s still stands out – that’s what happens when you deliver your product in a unique way that lives long in the memory.

What’s your ‘pizza spinning’ equivalent?

Have a top weekend.

Regards

Nick
