Soft Skills I Developed Through Volunteering: How Community Involvement Shapes Personal and Professional Growth

Twelve years ago, I found myself in Munich for the first time, far from my home in Karnataka, India. Like many others who have moved abroad, I experienced the inevitable pangs of homesickness. I missed my family, my culture, my language, and of course, the food. However, I soon discovered a way to bridge that gap by getting involved in the local Indian community, specifically with the Kannada Community in Munich. What started as a simple desire to connect with others quickly grew into a deep and lasting involvement, culminating in my role as a volunteer and board member for a local non-profit Community Association.

The Power of Community Work

When I first arrived in Munich in September 2012, I was determined to stay connected to my roots. By November, I had already immersed myself in community activities, volunteering for the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations—an event that brought together over 120 Kannadigas. As an extrovert, I found it relatively easy to dive in and start contributing, but what I didn’t expect was how profoundly this involvement would shape my personal and professional life.

Over the past 12 years, my participation in the community has not only kept me connected to my culture but also provided invaluable lessons and experiences that have shaped my soft skills. These are the kind of skills that aren't often taught in formal education but are essential in the workplace and in life.

Soft Skills Gained Through Volunteering

  • Event Planning and Organization: Whether it's organizing a food festival for 3,500 people or a smaller gathering for 50, each event has taught me how to manage different dynamics. I've learned to engage crowds, manage resources, and ensure that everything runs smoothly, often under less-than-ideal circumstances. This has translated into a stronger ability to handle complex projects in my professional life.
  • Empathetic Communication: Working with a diverse community means interacting with people from various backgrounds and with different needs. I’ve learned how to communicate empathetically, tailoring my approach to suit different individuals, whether they are community members, sponsors, or other stakeholders. This skill has proven invaluable in the multi-stakeholder workshops I facilitate in my professional role.
  • Attention to Detail: In community events, the small details matter. Missing even a minor element can have long-term repercussions for the reputation of the organization. This experience has heightened my attention to detail in all aspects of my work, ensuring that nothing is overlooked.
  • Leadership and Team Building: Leadership in a volunteer setting is about more than just delegating tasks. It’s about inspiring others, taking on tasks both large and small, and creating future leaders. I've embraced the concept of shared leadership, ensuring that the team remains inclusive and supportive. Keeping a team of volunteers motivated and intact is a delicate art that has honed my leadership skills.
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Not every event goes according to plan. Sometimes you have fewer volunteers than expected, or the weather throws a wrench in your carefully laid plans. These experiences have taught me to be flexible and adaptable, skills that are crucial when managing projects with tight deadlines and unpredictable variables.
  • Project Management: From creating documentation templates to budgeting, marketing, and sponsorship pitching, community work has given me hands-on experience in project management. These are skills that directly translate into my professional responsibilities, making me more effective and organized.
  • Confidence and Public Speaking: If you’ve ever had stage fright, there’s nothing like community involvement to help you overcome it. The more you engage with people, the more confident you become. My experience in event planning and execution has made me more comfortable speaking in front of large groups, a skill that has greatly benefited my professional life.

The Value of Community Involvement

Community work does more than just benefit the society at large; it enriches your own life in ways you might never expect. The soft skills I’ve developed through my involvement with the Kannada Community have been instrumental in my professional growth. They’ve made me a better communicator, a more effective leader, and a more adaptable and confident individual.

I encourage everyone, especially budding professionals, to get involved in community work. It’s an incredible way to give back, connect with others, and develop essential skills that will serve you well in both your personal and professional life. Whether you’re organizing events, leading teams, or simply volunteering your time, the lessons you’ll learn are invaluable.

A Call to Action

To those who know me professionally, you’re likely familiar with my facilitation and moderation skills in multi-stakeholder workshops. But if you’re part of the Indian community in Munich, you know my passion for bringing people together. As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded that community work is a powerful tool for personal growth.

I would love to hear from others who have had similar experiences. How has your involvement in community work shaped your soft skills? What lessons have you learned along the way?

And to those who haven’t yet taken the plunge, I warmly invite you to get involved. Whether you’re new to the community or have been here for years, there’s always room for more hands, more ideas, and more hearts. Let’s continue to build a stronger, more connected community—one that not only enriches the lives of its members but also helps each of us grow as individuals.

Thanks for the article & the mention Amar. Volunteering has its own beauty of fulfillment in life. I grew up in a village seeing the power of community, leadership & people helping each other without any expectations or just being there for a community when needed. One learns to eliminate ego when the vision/ purpose of the community is of utmost importance. Volunteering has been an organic part of my life. Soft skills that one can learn being in ths journey is endless , like critical thinking, empathy, strategic planning, commmunication & stakeholder management , moderation, leadership & situational awareness. Having founded Shashaa e.V. in 2020 & being an active volunteer along with Anand S. Asopa in couple of communities around us, can share that opportunities are infinite if you genuinely want to make a positive difference in this world. For those who haven’t explored it , JUST GO FOR IT. #volunteering #community #leadership
