Socks, Scrutiny, and Success. Under the Microsope.

Socks, Scrutiny, and Success. Under the Microsope.

Last weekend, Anusuya and I were getting ready for dinner at our neighbor's house. I thought I had picked out a perfectly suitable outfit - khaki pants, a button-down shirt, and a sport coat. But as soon as I emerged from the bedroom, Anusuya started examining me with a critical eye. "Those pants are a bit loose, and the shirt looks wrinkled. Maybe try dark jeans and the navy blue sweater instead?"

With a deep sigh, I changed into the outfit she recommended, but the inspection didn't end there. "Your socks don’t match the sweater. Here, try these blue ones," she said, handing me a pair.

I don’t particularly enjoy being nitpicked, but I know it comes from a place of care.

However, being under scrutiny at home is one thing; being micromanaged at work is entirely different. Imagine if your boss hovered over you, scrutinizing every minor decision and detail and constantly questioning your judgment. Being under the microscope at work can make employees feel undervalued and hinder their productivity. Studies show that micromanagement decreases motivation and creativity, leading to disengagement in the workplace.

While occasional feedback at home may come from a place of care, constant scrutiny at work is counterproductive. As managers, we must strike a balance between providing guidance and trusting employees to do their jobs effectively. Rather than micromanaging every detail, we must empower our teams through mentorship and open communication. Employees should feel supported, not stifled.?

I am curious to hear in what ways have you seen managers encourage autonomy and growth? or what leadership techniques do you use to bring out the best in your team ?

I welcome your perspectives in the comments below. Happy Friday !

This is why many great ICs don't make good managers. They care too much about the nits and can't let go. Best managers let reports make small mistakes and discover them too. Help is most appreciated when requested & granted; not as much when it is imposed!
