Sociocracy and Semco style management

Sociocracy and Semco style management

If you're familiar with Semco Style self-management then you're already aware of the transformative power of decentralization in organizations. Are you aware of sociocracy too? It's a flexible governance method all built on decentralization and consent, fostering an inclusive and empowering organizational environment.

What is Sociocracy?

Sociocracy, also known as Dynamic Governance, was developed in the 1980ies in the Netherlands. It combines ideas from natural systems, cybernetics and Quaker decision-making. It comes with consent (not consensus) decision-making, defined domains of teams (called circles), a way to select people into roles, and a number of meeting, co-creation and feedback processes. By creating a structure where everyone has a voice, Sociocracy allows organizations to tap into the collective intelligence of their members, leading to better decisions and increased engagement.

It's used in hundreds of organizations worldwide across a lot of sectors like nonprofit, businesses, communities and schools.

How Sociocracy Differs from Semco Style:

While both Sociocracy and Semco Style advocate for self-management and decentralization, Sociocracy offers a more structured and inclusive approach to decision-making. Semco Style emphasizes employee autonomy and freedom, while Sociocracy focuses on collaboration and equal participation in decision-making processes.

On May 4+5, you can learn much more about sociocracy than a blogpost will ever be able to say because we're inviting dozens of practitioners to speak at the Annual Sociocracy Conference! Since it's May 4th, we gave it a May the Force star wars theme - where people collaborate to beat the hierarchical and oppressive systems. It'll be fun!
