SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS

SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS

Writing and reflecting on socio-economics factors, my social economics in juxtaposition to the Sahel's social economics has been a little bit daunting. The big question is why?

Hence the reason why I invite you all to consider starting by listening to this LSE iQ podcast on How does class define us?- While potentially viewing some of my photos and re-discovering my position in the social realm, I was embedded into while growing up.

I'm unsure about my place in society. The lines between social upward mobility and fitting in have become blurry. Since returning to Ghana country, I've noticed that people's conversations and behaviors differ greatly from my worldview. This has made me question my identity and where I belong. I'm struggling to adapt to my cultural heritage.

Who or what institution should take responsibility for this confusion? I dare say that my accomplishments and background have been misunderstood. Despite this, I'm sitting in the same place I was fifteen years ago, believing I can create a venture that offers artistic journeys for digital nomads. This venture would promote cultural exchange, skill-building, and entrepreneurship among local Sahel residents.

self portrait 1997-98

I didn't follow the traditional path of attending law school or leading a career in finance. When I was 7, my dad asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. He gave me a list of professions to consider, and after taking a close look, I told him; I might want to work in advertising. He looked at me and said that wasn't ambitious enough. I felt discouraged and began wondering about the meaning of life...

By the time I was 8, I discovered something that sparked my curiosity. In my summer science textbook, I learned about cosmonauts - people who travel to space. I excitedly shared this with my mom and told her that since they had sent a dog to space first, I was happy to have my stuffed animal, Rebecca, as my space companion.

Neuroscience: Do socio-economic factors affect our biology?

That summer, right after 5th grade, I visited Houston, Texas, in the USA for the first time. I returned to my mom in France with a special treat - frozen-dried ice cream, a novelty that astronauts ate in space.

Fast forward, to when I started high school in Ghana, the senior students, I got the privilege to have senior students give me a tour of the school campus. They showed me the school mascot, a majestic dolphin statue. I was amazed by its grandeur and the time it must have taken to put it together. I felt like I was reaching for the stars, and I believed it was the start of an incredible adventure. Later that same year, a boy called Armstrong told me that my dreams of space travel would never happen in my lifetime. I must have been dreaming big. Still, the ambitious spirit instilled in me from a young age kept burning, and I felt like every obstacle I faced was training for my future as an astronaut.

Of course, this mindset - this make-believe, if you will - was precisely the paradigm shift I needed. It was a mindset that kept me going all those years, driving me forward with a sense of purpose and determination.:

Reflection: How do you reason with Jane Austen's arguments in juxtaposition to YOUR mindset and outlook on life?

interlude: SOCIOECONOMIC FACTORS IN THE SAHEL

AN EXAMINATION OF CONDITIONS AND CHALLENGES

The Sahel, a region stretching across the African continent just below the Sahara, includes parts of countries such as Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, and Mauritania. This region has been the focus of significant socioeconomic concern, with a confluence of poverty, limited educational opportunities, and restricted access to essential resources defining the lives of many inhabitants. The challenges in the Sahel are multidimensional, combining environmental issues such as drought with systemic socioeconomic factors that have left the region vulnerable. This essay explores the socioeconomic landscape of the Sahel, examining poverty, education, healthcare, and resource access while discussing the pressing Sahel drought issue and its effects.

What is the current state of technology infrastructure in rural or disadvantaged areas of the Sahel region?
How can digitization efforts address the issue of limited access to technology, such as computers, smartphones, and internet connectivity?

1. Poverty in the Sahel

Poverty in the Sahel is pervasive and persistent, affecting a significant percentage of the population. According to the World Bank, more than 40% of people in countries such as Niger and Chad live below the international poverty line. Factors contributing to this high poverty rate include limited economic diversification, low productivity in agriculture, and weak infrastructure. The agricultural sector, the primary livelihood source for most Sahelians, is largely subsistence-based, with few opportunities for farmers to engage in value-added processes or scale their production for higher income. As a result, many households are left in a cycle of low income, limiting their ability to improve their quality of life or invest in education and healthcare.

2. Education and Literacy

Educational access and quality in the Sahel are among the lowest in the world, with stark disparities in enrollment rates and literacy levels. The education system is hindered by inadequate infrastructure, lack of trained teachers, and limited resources, especially in rural areas. According to UNESCO, literacy rates in the Sahel are among the lowest in Africa, with only about 30% of the adult population in countries like Mali and Niger being literate. These low literacy levels contribute to a lack of skilled labor, which stifles economic development and leaves young people with few employment prospects outside of agriculture or informal sectors. Additionally, gender disparities in education are prevalent, with girls facing significant barriers due to cultural practices, early marriage, and domestic responsibilities.

The following are ai. prompt questions for potential solutions;

  1. How can Art Workshop Tourism balance the needs of tourists with the needs of local communities, ensuring that the benefits are shared equitably?
  2. In what ways can art and cultural exchange programs like Art Workshop Tourism contribute to bridging the literacy gap and promoting education in the Sahel region?
  3. What role can social enterprises like Art Workshop Tourism play in empowering women and girls in rural communities, and how can they address the specific challenges faced by this demographic?
  4. In what ways can Art Workshop Tourism facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing between local communities, artists, and tourists, and what benefits can arise from these interactions?

3. Healthcare and Mortality Rates

The healthcare situation in the Sahel is challenging, with limited access to quality medical facilities, a shortage of healthcare professionals, and high disease rates. Maternal and child mortality rates are exceptionally high due to inadequate prenatal and postnatal care. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that maternal mortality rates in the Sahel are more than double the global average. The prevalence of diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and respiratory infections further complicates the health landscape. In addition, malnutrition is a persistent issue in the Sahel, especially during lean seasons when food is scarce. Malnutrition exacerbates health issues, weakens immune systems, and impairs cognitive and physical development, particularly in children.

What gaps or weaknesses exist in current laws and regulations regarding the protection of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions?
How can an art workshop tour, come to the solutions to some of these above-mentioned concerns?

How do we organise to explore the feasibility of a proof-of-concept?

4. Access to Resources

Have you ever thought about how much we rely on the Internet in our daily lives? We use online translators to communicate with people who speak different languages, and Google Maps to navigate unfamiliar places. For many of us, especially in countries like the United States and those in Europe, accessing the Internet is no big deal.

However, in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, it's a different story. Despite being home to over 1 billion people, Africa has a surprisingly small presence on the web. But a group of African pioneers is working to change this. They're on a mission to put Africa on the Internet map and make sure the continent's voices are heard online.

How can Art Workshop Tourism ensure that its activities are environmentally sustainable and contribute to the preservation of the Sahel region's natural resources?

Access to basic resources like clean water, food, and energy is limited in the Sahel. Water scarcity is a major issue, with many communities relying on seasonal rivers and underground wells that often run dry during extended drought periods. Food insecurity is also widespread, driven by poor agricultural yields and limited access to markets. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), more than 20 million people in the Sahel face food shortages each year. Energy access is minimal, with most households relying on biomass like wood or charcoal for cooking, which contributes to deforestation and environmental degradation.

Space technology can help Africa improve crop yields, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance food security by providing data on soil moisture, crop health, and weather patterns.

What are the long-term sustainability prospects for Art Workshop Tourism, and how can the venture ensure that its impact is lasting and beneficial for local communities?

5. The Sahel Drought Problem

The Sahel is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change, and drought has been a recurrent issue that severely affects socioeconomic conditions. The Sahel drought problem began in the 1970s, leading to widespread famine and displacing millions of people. This issue has persisted due to erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged dry seasons, and increasing temperatures. Drought impacts agricultural productivity, leaving families without sufficient food or income. In pastoral communities, drought leads to livestock deaths, undermining the primary livelihood source for these communities. The frequent occurrence of droughts has left the Sahel in a state of perpetual food crisis, requiring constant humanitarian intervention.

What can you do to help build capacity?

Get involved in the Agriculture Sector.

  1. Developing Sustainable Agriculture: Promoting sustainable agricultural practices to improve productivity, reduce poverty, and protect the environment.
  2. Improving Market Access: Strengthening agricultural value chains to improve market access and increase farmers' incomes.
  3. Developing Irrigation: Developing irrigation systems to improve agricultural productivity and reduce dependence on rainfall.

Climate change exacerbates the drought issue, with predictions indicating that rainfall will become even more unpredictable in the coming decades. This situation places additional strain on limited water resources, aggravating conflicts over water and land use, particularly between farmers and herders. The loss of arable land due to desertification further limits agricultural expansion, heightening food insecurity and poverty.

6. Conclusion

The socioeconomic challenges facing the Sahel are complex, with poverty, poor education, limited healthcare, and restricted access to resources shaping the lives of millions of people. These issues are further compounded by the region's susceptibility to drought, which devastates agriculture and threatens food security. Addressing the root causes of poverty in the Sahel requires a multifaceted approach that includes investment in infrastructure, educational reform, healthcare improvements, and sustainable resource management.

Furthermore, climate adaptation strategies are essential to mitigate the impacts of drought and build resilience in the face of an uncertain climate future. Without significant intervention, the Sahel will remain trapped in a cycle of poverty and vulnerability, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated efforts to bring sustainable development to this region.
